This is one of a series to help older readers who are struggling with reading. The methods used in this program are based on the Orton-Gillingham approach, in that, every sound and spelling rule is taught in a structured, cumulative manner with repetition.

The entire reading program is 55 lessons with exercises and word lists, designed to gradually teach students to decode words using intensive phonics, rules, and memory cues. The lessons address phoneme awareness (sounds), phonics (putting sounds to letters and words), spelling rules, rule breakers, word decoding, letter reversals, homophones, and common mistakes.

Class Organization
Each class will cover approximately one lesson in the accompanying workbook. I will introduce the topic through a discussion, activity, or perhaps a song. I use the "I can - we can - you can" approach to learning. We will complete some activities in class and anything not completed in class will be assigned as practice or homework. Additional resources may be provided for more difficult concepts or by request.

Students will not be muted during class unless there is significant background noise. Students may use their most effective method for communication, including a verbal response, chat, communication board, or use of an interpreter. I do not know ASL. Every student will have opportunities to answer or ask questions. Parents may be present for the class but are required by Outschool to remain off-screen. If learners need to take a break, they may turn off their video or sound. Learners may also choose to watch the video after class to reinforce concepts or if they miss class.

Course Content - there are 18 lessons covered within 20 lessons to allow for practice as needed

Session 2: Consonants, Vowels, and High-Frequency Words
Session 3: CVC words
Session 4: Consonant Blends

Session 6: The /th/ sound
Session 7: The /nk/ sound
Session 8: The /ng/ sound
Session 9: The /ck/ sound
Session 10: 'ay' and 'ey' as Long 'a'
Session 11: The /oo/ sounds
Session 12: The /qu/ sounds and confused vowels

Students will be required to have their video on. Students will be encouraged to speak as it is an important part of learning the sounds. It is also helpful for students to know how to annotate on the screen to participate fully in the games and onscreen activities.

Class videos may be reviewed for additional practice or if a student misses a class.
