Experiencia de clase

This course will give students a chance to practice roleplaying a D&D 5e character, cooperate with peers, and accomplish a shared goal. Students may choose a pre-made character if they wish or invest some time making their own character before class.
After introducing ourselves and characters in the first class, the group will begin to explore the dungeon. This will require cooperation and strategic use of their own character's skills. At times players will face challenges such as traps or other hazards that can be avoided through careful planning. They will also have to face monsters which they must either evade, fight, or out-think. Finally, in the course of the dungeon-delving they will face one or more puzzles that they must solve to reach their goal.

First day: Introduction of players and characters, discovery of a dungeon and a goal to achieve within, entrance to the dungeon, cooperation in dealing with a couple minor hazards or monsters.

Second day: All players cooperate to solve a puzzle and face the ultimate challenge in a final encounter. Characters achieve their goal and find the dungeon's treasure.

I alternate between using Roll20 tabletop to show the party in the dungeon visually and using theatre -of-the-mind style play where players collectively imagine the scene as the dungeon master and fellow players describe events.
I can support new players who are still trying to understand the game mechanics and play their character efficiently. I always encourage players to roleplay characters as engaging individuals, but I require all students to play with kindness, so players are not allowed to attack other players or do other things that might create a negative experience for their peers. Instead, I present situations that encourage and require cooperation, and the in-game rewards for cooperation are substantial.

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
I am just starting on Outschool, but I have been teaching over 20 years. I have been DMing Dungeons and Dragons 30+ years, and I have taught online since 2011. I love languages and have taught Latin and Ancient Greek and studied many others including German and Italian. I have also taught ancient history and literature, classical and comparative mythology, and linguistics. I also love to code, and I have taught friends and family coding over the years, though not in the classroom. I have a Ph.D. In Classics (Greek & Latin) from the University of Virginia, and I currently teach Latin full time for grades 6 through 12. I have four creative and lively sons, three of which have already enjoyed courses on Outschool.
