"You enter the village, tired and sore from your adventure. An old woman approaches asking if you would like some appl-" "I burn the witch!" "You what!?" "I. BURN. THE. WITCH!" "What witch!?" "The old lady that's selling apples!" "I... uh..." Dungeon Mastering is tough and can be overwhelming. I aim to help make it less so. In this class we're going to cover a range of topics. The learner is encouraged to direct the focus of the lesson to best address their questions, as they explore on how to be a DM. Topics include, and are not limited to: Where to start - Learning some of the basic rules and the differences of rules intereprations and applications, including Rules as Written, Rules as Intended, and Homebrew. World building - You have players, but now you need a place for the adventure to start. We'll start simple and work our way to having a framework for the world. Frodo came from a small village. Luke Skywalker came from a farm. Katara came from the southern water tribe surrounded by sea and ice. Interpersonal Communication - As the DM, there are times you'll have to be a mediator and peacekeeper amongst the group and handle things as fairly as possible. We'll go over ways to maintain a level head and make sure our players are heard. Improvisation - Unlike a video game, there are no limitations except those set up at the start of the game and the boundaries set in place to protect the players. So there will be times where a player will give us a curveball and it can stop the game. We'll go over ways to improvise on the spot, that make sense in your world. Invisible Rails - Sandboxes are great, but when you're given a world where you can do almost anything, it can be pretty daunting. We'll go over how to create invisible rails to help guide the players along the story, where their choices still have meaning and can affect the world.
