Each week, we will work on a different project in class. Live, real time feedback is given to students during class. At the start of the following class, we follow up with inviting students to show case their work during "sharing time". Students are always encouraged to make refinements and add details to their drawing during the week so we can see their spectacular creation!

Experiencia de clase

"I want to draw a pink elephant with fiery dragon wings eating s'mores!"

Ok, great! Now where do we start?

OVERVIEW
This class is specifically designed for very young artists (4 to 6 years old) to grow their love of art and to start teaching them the the building blocks of art fundamentals. The class is designed to be relaxed, fun and engaging to help young learners build confidence in virtual learning and also, to develop social engagement skills with other peers and with teachers. We incorporate a mixture of warm up activities, ice breakers and encouraging a free flow of student ideas in deciding the weekly project for the class.

This class teaches the skills needed to put young artists imagined ideas to paper using basic shapes and lines. We start slow, step by step to lay down basic foundations of 2D drawing.

We are not seeking perfection and young artists need to understand that! They are often their worst critic and are learning how to manage complex emotions when their drawing sometimes don't turn out just how they want. I have a saying, "do not let perfect be the enemy of good!". Learning about how to turn a mistake into a "beautiful oops"! Have fun! Learners who have fun, want to continue and more practice means getting better and achieving more than they thought was possible themselves.

This class is about
- developing self-confidence
- positive affirmations (both giving and receiving)
- building fine motor skills
- learning to focus and follow simple directions
- developing listening skills
- knowing how and when to ask for help
- learning how to manage learning in an online virtual class

This content of this class is learner led - at this age group, to keep young learners engaged, the subject matter needs to be something they are excited about!

STRUCTURE
This is an ongoing class but learners can start or stop or jump in at any point in time since each week works as a stand alone unit. The class opens up with an ice breaker/warm up exercise and challenge. This is then followed by our weekly art project which learners may complete during class time or continue to work on during the week. We end each class with some sharing time for teacher feedback and also to show work off to our fellow artists.

The weekly format is both teacher and student led. This means that while I structure each class week by week to best tailor the class to the group's development points, I am very much guided by student interests. This keeps it exciting! In some weeks, we may do a cute self portrait Chibi. In another week, we may draw a flower in the window focusing on sun and shadowing effect. And sometimes, a pink elephant with fiery dragon wings eating s'mores!

Orientación para padres
This class is intended to be a social art class with student interactions. We share our work with each other, talk about our ideas and add some humor. In my experience, it is important to create a fun, engaging atmosphere while we learn art. Students who have fun, want to also continue. We want them to have confidence and try new things. Lastly, Parents: you are often in the best position to know what your learners are most passionate about and the best way they learn. If you have insights, please always feel free to reach out to me by messaging me directly or posting directly into the Classroom. This class is for your kiddos and I love parent engagement as it helps me as an educator to keep content relevant and fun for all learners.
Lista de útiles escolares
A sketch book, drawing pencils and eraser are highly recommended. Loose paper will work fine but please ensure that the paper is filed neatly as it is beneficial for your artist to review their previous drawings and see how far they have come!

From time to time, we shall work with colored pencils, water colors and other art supplies. If so, this shall be posted in class for the week ahead. Extra art supplies will always be optional and flexible given that I am aware not every household will have this on hand.

Los estudiantes no necesitarán utilizar ninguna aplicación o sitio web más allá de las herramientas estándar de Outschool.

I am passionate about sharing my love for fantasy art and empowering students with the foundational tools they need to make their imaginations come alive on paper. I teach art to kids from ages 3 to 18+ years old.

For the younger kids, Harry Potter, Wings of Fire, Warrior Cats, Squishmallows, Pokemon... these are all popular names in any household with kids. As a father of three school-aged kids, I see firsthand that art has a valuable role in any child’s education. Art inspires creativity, builds concentration/focus and helps particularly younger students work on fine motor skills. There is a lot of pride and sense of accomplishment when a child's “masterpiece" is created, and it's always fun to show it off to friends and family.

For the older students, Anime (Demon Slayer, My Hero Academia, One Piece) is a hot topic. Digital Art and Animation is another fast growing art medium and an important skill set for aspiring arts looking to get into the entertainment industry, specifically, video games and animated movies. 2D art skills always remains a staple and I also help older students looking to build their portfolio for college applications.

Art is important. It can communicate information, shape our everyday lives, make a social statement and be enjoyed for aesthetic beauty. Art matters because it can illustrate the human experience. It is meant to move people either on an intellectual or emotional level. Art is not just an expression of emotion but also a medium for communicating ideas. It can act as therapeutic relief, a conduit for self-expression, or simply a way to appreciate life's beauty. Through art, we can chronicle history, embody societal values, and comment on political or social events.

The Core Six: Why Art Matters

The realm of art is vast, and its significance has evolved over time. However, there are seven primary reasons why art has remained indispensable to humanity:

 1. Escape from Reality: Art offers a haven from the every day, allowing us to step into different worlds and perspectives.

2. Fostering Community: It establishes a shared identity and sense of belonging among diverse groups.

3. Self-Expression and Awareness: Art provides a platform to voice our feelings, thoughts, and identities.

4. Contemplation and Reflection: Through art, we can introspect and ponder life's mysteries.

5. Entertainment and Joy: Beyond its deeper meanings, art can also be sheer fun and enjoyment.

6. Eliciting Strong Reactions: Art has the power to inspire awe, wonder, and introspection.

I have a degree in animation and over twenty years of experience not only teaching art but also as a professional artist, working on everything from Dungeons & Dragons illustrations to UX design for large-scale corporate applications. I love what I do, so it seldom feels like work to me, and it feels great to be able to help lay the foundation for that kind of relationship with art in others.
