Experiencia de clase

  • Some things I believe: - Drawing is a skill that you already have, but no matter how developed your skills, you can always improve. - Learning to draw can be an excellent way to express your creativity, originality, personality, and emotions. - Hobbies that are hard, challenging, or frustrating at times are also some of the most rewarding and fun. - Anything can be learned with clearly presented, properly paced instruction, and sufficient practice. Drawing fundamentals I cover repeatedly in these classes: - Techniques for smooth confident lines and shapes - Progress from simple shapes to complex so we don’t get stuck in the details too early. - Construction drawing using 3D shapes, midlines, contour lines and construction lines to get the drawing in place before moving on to the inking stage. - How and when and why to use an eraser (it's not just for 'mistakes'). - Good inking technique and why it's so different from penciling. - Coloring (e.g., how to layer and mix colored pencils/pencil crayons; how to choose the right color). - Shading techniques such as how to notice the edges and shapes formed by light and shadow patches. - Mindset fundamentals such as reframing 'failure' and rethinking our negative self talk.
As a professional freelance illustrator and youth art instructor I have over a decade of experience teaching drawing to young artists, both in person and online. I am passionate about helping them discover and nurture their creativity and expand their artistic skills.

I believe in respecting each student's individuality and never talking down to them. My goal is for students to enjoy the process of drawing and help them navigate the challenges that come with learning something new.

I share tips and techniques that I wish I had known when I was their age and teach them the same construction drawing fundamentals that I use in my daily work. I look forward to meeting you and helping the young artist in your family take their skills to the next level.

Detalles: There won't be any homework in this class as each week will be starting fresh on 1 or 2 complete drawings. If you don't finish your drawing by the end of class, I encourage you to make time before our next class to finish it off!
Pencil: there are so many different types of pencils in the world, find one you like to draw with that is comfortable and erasable.

Eraser: not just the eraser on the back of the pencil, but a dedicated eraser that works well.

Inker: anything with black, non-erasable ink will work. A black ink marker like a Sharpie can work, or a black fineliner technical pen or a brush pen works as well.

Paper: blank white paper with no lines, or a drawing sketchbook is ideal. Paper that has a bit of thickness can be helpful to survive vigorous erasing or adding layers of coloured pencils or markers.

Sharpener: check to make sure your pencil and sharpener fit together and that the pencil sharpener is functioning. Having a small garbage bin for pencil shavings can be very handy as well.

Colors: I like pencil crayons/colored pencils because they can be layered and blended well and don’t make a mess, but markers, pastels, paints, inks, and digital tools are all great ways to color as well.

No matter what tools you are using, please take good care of them. That means: put lids back on markers so they don’t dry out, keep your pencil sharp when it gets dull, don’t draw on your eraser or dig holes out of it, and be very careful with ink and paint to avoid spilling on anything. If your hands get dirty making art, make sure to wash them after class.

Nothing in the content of the class is inappropriate for children of this age range and all the media referenced is made for them (Rated G or PG only). Some of the characters we draw may be holding a weapon such as a sword, staff, or bow and arrow, but we will not draw any guns, weapons of war, or anything graphically violent or suggestive.
