Word problems can be the stumbling block for many students. They know the math, but they can't seem to get the right answer. Drawing like a mathematician helps children make sense of word problems before attempting to solve them. Once they can SEE the steps they need to take, then they can SOLVE. This class is designed to help learners analyze a multi-step word problem by marking the text (identifying important information) and then using the important information to create a visual image that will guide them in solving. Students will learn the bar modeling strategy (a strategy used in Singapore Math), double number lines, and other visual solving methods. Multiple strategies for solving a problem will also be explored. In this class students get an opportunity to both "draw like an artist" (draw what they think of when they read the problem) and also "draw like a mathematician" (use a specific modeling strategy to represent the problem so it can be solved) for each word problem. Each class begins with an introduction of the theme and the teacher modeling the strategy/skill for the week. Students then are guided through solving similar problems, and finally asked to work independently. The final problem is a challenge problem that the class works collaboratively together to solve. This ongoing class will focus on fourth grade math standards, so learners should already have mastered third grade skills. The focus of the class with be on problem solving strategies, not computation (although instruction/support will be provided as needed). Multi-step word problems used will cover these topics: -addition -subtraction -multiplication -division -fractions -geometry -measurement -data and graphing Each week will have a theme that ties together the word problems. I will choose themes based on learners' interests. Examples of themes are Around the World, The Great Outdoors, Space, Dogs, and even Cheese! We will be using Nearpod during the class to draw and share work. If your learner will be using a tablet, please download the free Nearpod app before class so that your child can fully participate. Since this class involves drawing, it may be easier for your child to draw if using a drawing tablet (for computer) or stylus (for tablet). Students will also be asked to annotate through Zoom in this class. Please be aware that the annotate feature is not available if joining class from a Chromebook. If using a Chromebook, your learner can still draw/solve on paper and share that way. They should be sure to have: -lined paper -a pencil -colored pencils, crayons, and/or markers

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
Maryland Certificado de Docencia en Educación elemental
Eighteen years as a public school teacher in Maryland and two years as an Outschool teacher have provided me the opportunity to teach learners from diverse backgrounds with a variety of learning styles. I began my teaching career in elementary school, teaching all subjects and earning my Masters of Education with a certificate in Gifted Education from Johns Hopkins University. Later, I added both Middle School Math: 6-9 and ESOL Pre-K-12 certifications to my professional certificate. Most recently, I taught middle school math, working with both accelerated students and those with Special Education needs. Because of my varied experiences, I have many strategies to help all kinds of learners.
Math is my passion because while there may only be one correct answer, there are often many different ways to solve the same problem. Exploring those different ways and finding a method of solving with which each learner feels most confident is what I love to do. I like to incorporate hands-on strategies, games, and interactive activities into my lessons to make math less scary for reluctant mathematicians and more engaging for everyone.
When I’m not thinking about math, I enjoy baking, cake decorating, drawing, working in my vegetable garden, and sewing. In my spare time, I can be found hiking, kayaking, bird watching, doing a puzzle, or assembling furniture. I look forward to meeting your learner!
