Are you ready to fall down the rabbit hole? This camp will feature drama, visual arts, STEM activities, and games all centred around Alice in Wonderland! This will not be a book club camp and campers will not be expected to do any reading in camp. They do not need to have read the book or seen the movie but should have some familiarity with the story in order to get the most out of the camp. I am a youth theatre director and elementary school teacher and have also taught summer camps for many years. Below is a more detailed breakdown about what each day of camp will cover: Day 1 - Meet Alice This day will focus on the character of Alice. We will make our own Alice puppets, get lost in a wacky world of our own by making a marble maze, learn what it's like for things to grow and shrink by playing a zoomed-in object guessing game, and make our own mysterious fizzy drink. We will also be introduced to the Alice in Wonderland Readers Theatre Script for the first time. Day 2 - Meet the Cheshire Cat and Caterpillar This day will focus on the characters of the Cheshire Cat and the Caterpillar. We will build our own caterpillars on a mushroom and Cheshire Cat faces, play a guess who game in the spirit of the Caterpillar, and do an improv exercise to try to make other campers grin like the cat. We will also be cast in our Alice in Wonderland Readers Theatre show and get to rehearse the script. Day 3 - Meet the Queen of Hearts This day will focus on the character of the Queen of Hearts. We will turn a deck of cards into a Wonderland worthy army, and paint salt dough hearts red. We will also continue to rehearse our Alice in Wonderland Readers Theatre show. Day 4 - Meet the Mad Hatter and the March Hare This day will focus on the characters of the Mad Hatter and March Hare. We will create a decorative mad hatter hat craft, explore head-scratching riddles and optical illusions, and celebrate our own un-birthdays with mini tea sandwiches. We will also have our final rehearsals for our Alice in Wonderland Readers Theatre show. Day 5 - Meet the White Rabbit This day will focus on the character of the White Rabbit. We will make our own craft pocket watches to make sure we won't be late, design a white rabbit face craft, make sure we beat the clock in an Alice-themed escape room, and play a variety of timed challenges. We will also get to perform our Alice in Wonderland Readers Theatre show. At the end of the camp, each camper will be presented with a certificate recognizing the special skills that they brought to Wonderland.

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
Hello OutSchool families! My name is Chelsey and I am an enthusiastic, and creative elementary school teacher, youth theatre director and summer camp leader. I hold a degree from the University of British Columbia in English and Theatre, and another degree in Elementary Education
with a focus in Indigenous Education from the same university.
Here on OutSchool, I teach performing arts related classes, classes that incorporate academic curriculum but in engaging and creative ways, and arts-based classes. My classes incorporate such things as visual arts, drama, STEM projects, games, experiments, and challenges. They are highly interactive and hands-on.
In all of my teaching experiences, my first priority is to focus on the social-emotional well-being of my students, making sure to build strong relationships and a sense of community where they can feel not only comfortable to be themselves but also highly valued, just as they are. I strongly believe that children and youth learn best through exploration, creativity, and opportunities to engage their curiosity. Most of all, learning should be fun and focus mostly on learner-centred experiences that are hands-on and open-ended, rather than a more teacher-centred approach. This helps develop a life-long love of learning that I believe is vital for all of us.
I have years of experience leading children in camps related to visual arts, performing arts, and nature - three things that are personal passions of mine. In addition, I have taught children's drama classes for years and even directed children and youth in four (and counting!) full length theatre productions. This is my seventh year teaching elementary school and I truly love it. I have taught all grades between Grade 3 and Grade 7. I also spent a year teaching in a mostly online environment due to Covid concerns and this helped me learn how to maintain my teaching values in an online environment. My favourite thing about being a teacher is getting to know the unique personalities of each of my students, and nurturing their strengths and abilities. I truly believe that all children have special gifts they are just waiting to share.
I can't wait to connect with you!
