In this fun lesson pupils will learn the basics of how to hold and play their Djembe drum. The class will begin with a demo on my lead drum and an active listening game where pupils listen to my drum and 'stand up' or 'please sit down' or 'clap their hands now' Following this we will chat about the origins of Djembe drumming We will then follow steps 1-5 of holding their Djembe drum correctly. Then it will be time to perform their first piece which is called 'Rainstorm' to explore different sounds their drum can make Then have fun learning how to coordinate their hands to play first hand position 'Bass' and 'Tone' learn how to keep a steady beat on their drum We will then move on to saying, clapping and playing a traditional Kuku rhythm from Guinea, West Africa. To finish we will have an active listening game called 'Don't drum this one back' where pupils listen to and copy all rhythms apart from the 'forbidden rhythm'! My teaching style is a call and response, so demo and pupils copy. Once learned then we will play our Djembe drums all together. I like to use games plus there will be a video clip of the Djembe drums in West Africa where they are traditionally played.
