Diwali is a five day festival of lights celebrated near the new moon between October and November. It is celebrated by over 1 billion people and is one of the most important holidays in India. Students will learn about the wide geographical region where Diwali is observed. They will also learn about the island of Sri Lanka. In this class, students will hear a summarized version of a myth from Ancient India (the story of Rama and Sita). Students will learn about some of the traditions which people observe during this festival. One of which is the lighting of "diyas" or oil lamps. Students will use their supplies (See list below) to construct their own “diya” wall hanging. This can be a beautiful gift or decoration. This class will include a brief presentation with pictures and maps and time for discussion. Almost half the class will be dedicated to creating the craft.

- I spent close to a year in India, traveling from the Himalayas in the North to Kanyakumari, the southernmost tip of the subcontinent. India’s enchanting land and culture taught me so much!
- I am a certified Waldorf teacher for grades 1 through 8 with years of experience in a variety of settings. Waldorf Teacher Training prepares teachers to determine which aspects of history and mythological stories are appropriate for children at each developmental stage.
-In Waldorf Education, the study of ancient civilizations is an integral part of the primary grades’ curriculum. This includes but is not limited to Ancient India, Persia, Babylonia, Greece and Egypt. Children learn about each civilization through its geography, mythology, music, art and traditional ways of life. As a multicultural teacher who has travelled extensively, I thoroughly enjoy teaching about ancient civilizations and cultures from around the world. 🌎
