How would you survive if you lived in the deepest, darkest ocean? In this fun, interactive class, we will take a virtual deep dive to the bottom of ocean trenches and explore the seafloor and the amazing creatures who live there. We'll visit a hydrothermal vent and meet tube worms, deep sea mussels, vent crabs, and more! We'll also discuss adaptations that enable animals to survive in dark, cold, sparse conditions such as bioluminescence. After learning about hydrothermal vent food webs and animal adaptations, students will create their own model of a vent community. Options will be given depending on the supplies that students have at home, including a 2-D poster and a 3-D diorama. All students will be able to show off their works in progress or finished creations at the conclusion of class.
