WHY DIGITAL ART? For today’s young creative visual artists, knowledge of digital art and animation processes are a must. It is building block of creating video games, animation shorts, fantasy game cards or complex, detailed game boards. WHAT IS THIS CLASS ABOUT? In this ongoing class, we will be using Procreate in a fun and collaborative way to build characters, landscapes and create concept art in a fantastical world where our imagination is the only limit. Students in this class will often have discretion to pursue an art subject aligned to their own interests, but I will provide the framework of each lesson highlighting a particular theme, tool or skill that we will be addressing in that class. Though Procreate is a very intuitive and powerful app, the variety of tools and functions within can be overwhelming. As such, we will be introducing and utilizing Procreate’s functions piece by piece each week, allowing students to digest the tools and techniques at their own pace. Over time, they will gain a thorough understanding of how to use layers, clipping masks, selection tools, grids, brush libraries, animation assist functions, and more, as well as a variety of techniques relating to line art, shading, and color theory. ***Parents should be aware that Procreate needs to be purchased in advance of the class for and can only be currently used on iOS.*** While it is possible to use your fingers on Procreate, it is highly recommended to have an Apple Pencil or other pressure-sensitive stylus that can be used with your Apple device. SAMPLE CURRICULUM Week of May 29: Chibi self-portraits Week of June 5: Happy mushrooms animation Week of June 12: Ninjago Ninja scene Week of June 19: Battle Chasers (Joe Mad) art style Week of June 26: Pokemon; Squirtle family Week of July 3: Budgies (requested!) Week of July 10: Octopus pirates Week of July 17: Wings of Fire: Qibli EXPECTATIONS FOR CLASS The Procreate App should be installed and ready to go before the learner joins class. I'd also recommend installing it early enough for your learner to be able to play around with it for a day or two beforehand. Please know that I cannot delve into detailed troubleshooting during class as I need to be engaging the group and provide the learning content. For this reason, I recommend trying the App ahead of time and contacting me a few days beforehand if you run into any issues. Alternatively, if you run into issues during class and we cannot quickly resolve it, we can work offline together to make sure it is fixed. This class is a meant to provide relevant and exciting content to engage students and interactions between them and myself. This is not a "lecture" style class. It is meant to be social and open to asking questions as they arise during the course of class, with a free flow of conversation, though we do ask that students mute themselves when not talking in order to avoid background noise. Within this age group, it is so important to keep the content fun, exciting and dynamic - it is through this, that learners develop a real passion for art and strive to get better. This is a Digital Art club and within any group class, students can be at different levels depending on how long they have been using Procreate. We aim this class at a beginner-to-intermediate level. Fresh beginners who has literally just downloaded the App can also join but there can be a learning curve. If this is your first time that your learner is using Procreate, please reach out to connect with me first. I can help place you into a class and chat ahead of time to see if it is a good fit. It will take a few classes to become familiar with how to navigate with the new tools and all I can advise is to be patient. You will get there! Learners will be surprised how quickly they pick things up within a few lessons and anyone that needs help is encouraged to ask questions. All classes are recorded to ensure that learners can revisit any materials that give them more difficulty or if they miss something. While not every project can be finished during the hour class period, I aim to always finish a the main points in class just to ensure everyone has a clear road map for the final steps even if sometimes they may not have time to complete it all. Many projects are intended for learners to work on during the week and share their work at the beginning of the following week's class. Lastly, have fun! Bring ideas and collaborate so we can get the best experience possible!

I am passionate about sharing my love for fantasy art and empowering students with the foundational tools they need to make their imaginations come alive on paper. I teach art to kids from ages 3 to 18+ years old.
For the younger kids, Harry Potter, Wings of Fire, Warrior Cats, Squishmallows, Pokemon... these are all popular names in any household with kids. As a father of three school-aged kids, I see firsthand that art has a valuable role in any child’s education. Art inspires creativity, builds concentration/focus and helps particularly younger students work on fine motor skills. There is a lot of pride and sense of accomplishment when a child's “masterpiece" is created, and it's always fun to show it off to friends and family.
For the older students, Anime (Demon Slayer, My Hero Academia, One Piece) is a hot topic. Digital Art and Animation is another fast growing art medium and an important skill set for aspiring arts looking to get into the entertainment industry, specifically, video games and animated movies. 2D art skills always remains a staple and I also help older students looking to build their portfolio for college applications.
Art is important. It can communicate information, shape our everyday lives, make a social statement and be enjoyed for aesthetic beauty. Art matters because it can illustrate the human experience. It is meant to move people either on an intellectual or emotional level. Art is not just an expression of emotion but also a medium for communicating ideas. It can act as therapeutic relief, a conduit for self-expression, or simply a way to appreciate life's beauty. Through art, we can chronicle history, embody societal values, and comment on political or social events.
The Core Six: Why Art Matters
The realm of art is vast, and its significance has evolved over time. However, there are seven primary reasons why art has remained indispensable to humanity:
1. Escape from Reality: Art offers a haven from the every day, allowing us to step into different worlds and perspectives.
2. Fostering Community: It establishes a shared identity and sense of belonging among diverse groups.
3. Self-Expression and Awareness: Art provides a platform to voice our feelings, thoughts, and identities.
4. Contemplation and Reflection: Through art, we can introspect and ponder life's mysteries.
5. Entertainment and Joy: Beyond its deeper meanings, art can also be sheer fun and enjoyment.
6. Eliciting Strong Reactions: Art has the power to inspire awe, wonder, and introspection.
I have a degree in animation and over twenty years of experience not only teaching art but also as a professional artist, working on everything from Dungeons & Dragons illustrations to UX design for large-scale corporate applications. I love what I do, so it seldom feels like work to me, and it feels great to be able to help lay the foundation for that kind of relationship with art in others.
