This is a 3-Day Series. Students will meet 3 times to complete Part 1 - Facial Motion.
Please note: Classes will meet 3 times within the same week for Summer Break.
This course has no class prerequisites but does require use of basic computer skills like typing, opening and closing programs, saving and exporting files, and mouse maneuvering. Students who have completed this class are recommended to join Series Part 2 and 3:
Part 2 - Visual Effects
https://outschool.com/classes/digital-animation-camp-part-2-anime-movies-production-visual-effects-aow0ddB8?refuid=RzeseCIM
Part 3 - Body Movement
https://outschool.com/classes/digital-animation-camp-part-3-anime-movies-production-body-movement-XXWH9tUN?refuid=RzeseCIM

In Part 1, students will take their drawing skills to the computer and use the animation features of Clip Studio Paint to bring their anime characters to life. While appreciating the artistry involved in colorwork, lineweight, and proportions, students will also learn the basic principles of animation such as pose-to-pose or following through in actions between frames as well as experiment with tools like onion skins and multiple layers or “cels.”

Day 1
Program Overview & Timeline: Naruto’s Wink
Students will explore the functionality of Clip Studio Paint and animate winking eyes on Naruto. They will learn how to open files for animation and export gif files. They will get used to the basics of the timeline functions and explore the onion skin tool which allows them to see multiple frame layers at a time to facilitate the animation process. Time will be set aside near the end to show students how to render their animations into gifs and movies.

Day 2
Onion skinning: Tanjiro’s Tears
Students will continue to experiment with onion skin’s functionality by generating multiple layers to animate a continuous stream of tears running down the face of a sorrowful Tanjiro, from Demon Slayer.

Day 3
Keyframes & Inbetweens: Anya’s Expression of Emotion Changes
Students will utilize all the new skills they have acquired to create a 3-frame animation of Anya, from Spy x Family. They will learn to use keyframes and Inbetweens to animate the facial expression, changing from a surprised look to a wide smile.

This is a beginners class for anime enthusiasts who would like to bring their characters to life with animation and produce movies digitally. By starting small and simple and committing to a deeper understanding of fundamental principles, we engage students with a gradual process of discovery and refinement as they try to push their work to a new higher standard. Class is highly-interactive and students will have the opportunity to exchange their ideas and chat with other Anime fans. Students are encouraged to pursue their interests in Part 2 and Part 3 where they will augment their animation skills to add body movement and special effects.

Please read below for frequently-asked questions on our policies:

Mandatory Video Check-In
Video check-in is mandatory for safety purposes per Outschool policy. Students are required to have their cameras on to allow the teacher to check in and verify each learner. Turning on their video at least once is also a requirement to access the recordings of meetings. After check-in, students have the option of either turning off their camera or leaving it on, whatever is their preference. Learn more about this by going to: https://support.outschool.com/en/articles/4063624-learner-verification

Missed Classes & Refunds
All of our classes are backed by the ‘Limited’ refund policy. Parents may withdraw up to a week before class starts with a full refund OR within 24 hours of purchase. In the event a learner misses a class, recordings are made available in each classroom. Students are more than welcomed to reach out for any questions and share their work in the classroom.

Late/ Missed Class
All classes will begin on time as long as one learner is in the classroom. In the event that no students are in the classroom at the assigned class time, the teacher will leave a message in the classroom and exit after ten minutes of waiting per Outschool policy.

Minimum Enrollment & Class Cancellation
A minimum of two learners is required for every class to run. In the event that we have to cancel a class, parents will be notified within 24 hours of class. Learners will have the option of either transferring to a more populated section of the same class or receiving a full refund, whichever is preferred.

Technical Difficulties
In the event of class delay/ cancellations due to unforeseeable technical issues, all families will be notified and a make-up section will be posted, or a refund will be issued if a make-up class cannot be scheduled.

Here is the link to access this browser-based free online digital editing program: https://www.photopea.com

Photopea is a free browser based photo editor and illustration tool capable of rendering and exporting images and basic animations. The interface works just like Adobe Photoshop but with limited functionality to make it viable for use in the browser. It is completely free to use making it a budget friendly way to learn digital art, you do not need to create an account or subscribe. Photopea can run on any device (desktop, laptop, tablet, phone or any other computer), but for the best comfort, we recommend having a big screen, a precise pointing device (a mouse or a stylus) and a keyboard. Photopea runs completely in your device, just like Sketch or Photoshop do. It is compatible for both Mac and Windows.
