In this class, we will learn about the history of sugar skulls. In Mexican culture, Dia de Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is celebrated on November 1st-November 2nd. Colorful and whimsical, sugar skulls are used to honor loved ones who have departed this Earth. Sugar skulls are a way to express celebration for loved one's, and are used as a way to honor those we care about. This class teaches about Day of the Dead and the significance of sugar skulls from a secular world view. After learning about sugar skulls, we will draw sugar skulls of our own! Learners will follow along with me as I demonstrate (step-by-step drawing tutorial) how to outline the skull and draw traditional roses, flowers, and the patterns that are found in sugar skulls. Learners are shown different places they can draw each flower/pattern. Sugar skulls are unique, and no two sugar skull drawings will look the same. Please refer to the video to see some examples of sugar skull drawings I have done -those will be the basis for this class. Drawing is a great way to practice following directions, patience, and focus. Drawing boosts creativity and produces serotonin - a way for your learner to receive that "feel good" feeling in a positive environment. Learning about the significance of sugar skulls while drawing is a great way for your learner to honor loved ones that have passed, learn about a different culture, and can help them feel more connected to not only themselves, but to others in the world. We will talk about how we're all unique, wonderful, and different - which is just what our drawings will be! Materials: Paper (Thick white cardstock or drawing paper recommended) Pencil (Please make sure that your pencil is sharpened before class) Eraser Colored Pencils and/or Crayons Sharpie or Marker (Black) Optional/Recommended: Two circular items to trace (for your sugar skulls eyes); One needs to be larger than the other Examples: Coins, Spice caps, Plastic bottle caps, etc. Anything circular that is smaller than 2 inches will work.
