Students will listen to and discuss the story Dear Santa by Susanna Leonard Hill. This is a story about a boy named Parker who decides to write an honest, heartfelt letter to Santa about not having perfect behavior. He receives a thoughtful response from Santa. Santa explains how wonderful it was to receive a letter from someone willing to admit his mistakes, and that no one is perfect. Santa suggests Parker should just focus on being the best version of himself. Students will write a letter to Santa which will include: 1. How the student has been helpful and kind (and/or or an honest reflection similar to Parker's, if they choose). 2. A wish list. (We will discuss the possibility of not getting everything on the list and being thankful for what they do receive.) 3. A thoughtful "thank you." Parents can mail this letter (recommended by December 1st) via USPS: https://about.usps.com/holidaynews/letters-from-santa.htm By following the instructions, students can receive a response from Santa with a letter postmarked from the North Pole. This writing activity has a high level of motivation for students (it can result in gifts after all!), which makes this one of the best types of writing. There are writing templates available to support students as needed. I am Laurie Collins. I have worked in the field of education for over twenty-five years, and have returned to my most beloved role of teacher. I love writing myself and find great happiness in sharing the enjoyment of writing with my students. https://www.lauriesinnovativelearningsolutions.com/ .

Being a teacher is in my genes! My mother was a teacher and my grandmother was a teacher. I have over 20 years of experience in the field of education in positions which include: elementary school teacher, mentor teacher, teacher certification field supervisor, K-12 reading specialist/education consultant, principal intern, assistant principal, college instructor, youth education program manager, and K-20 virtual teacher.
I am excited for the opportunity to teach classes that will enable students to increase their reading, writing, and math skills!
Some of my achievements include:
-Traveled to New Zealand to observe, learn from, and teach in schools with a 99% literacy rate. Implemented strategies upon return, yielding the same efficacy rate.
-Wrote and received a grant to work with the author of The Gift of Dyslexia.
-Awarded mentor position; provided support and training for new teachers.
-Synthesized and implemented two district-approved math curriculums to increase student math proficiency.
-Supervised teacher interns at the University of Washington; resulted in 100% job placement rate in teaching positions upon graduation.
-Designed and implemented a K-12 reading program for five school districts in Pierce County, WA; closed the opportunity gap in reading for Native American students in one district.
-Achieved a 97% success rate for tribal college students who took all five sections of the GED in 2013 (compared to national rate of 75%).
-Published Reading Strategies curriculum in The Seattle Times.
