Experiencia de clase

Please note that this is for teens. There is a child/preteen class offered in another listing. However, I do trust parent's judgment in terms of which class is the best fit for your learner despite age.

Updated: After listening to parent feedback, I have decided to make this class longer to facilitate discussion with students. My hope is they can discuss what they have encountered with one another after we get through the initial lesson. This class can run as much as 25 minutes late if there is a lot of discussion and questions, especially when the class is larger. Resources will be handed out to parents and students in the classroom at the end of our discussion.

Parents and Students, protect yourselves by taking this class. Cyber safety is the safe and responsible use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). Cyber Safety is founded on: Maintaining a positive approach about the many benefits brought by technologies and encouraging the public to identify the risks associated with ICT. Cyber Safety is not only about your computer, it is about any medium that transmits personal information, including phones and other electronic devices. Most individuals do not realize that just forwarding a single picture that someone else sends you, in many states, can lead to felony charges and having to register as a Sex Offender. Even juveniles can face these charges. Currently one in six pre-teens/teens admits to having sent inappropriate texts via cell phones. Schools see students losing scholarships and acceptances to colleges every year. Let this class help you avoid making decisions that can permanently alter your life.

Now is the time to have this discussion with your student. When it comes to cyber safety, you can't be too cautious and this class tackles those hard conversations.

Topics include:
1. Cyber Bullying
2. Malware/Ransomware/ Man in the Middle Attacks/Phishing Scams
3. Sexting/How to identify a Predator, Groomers
4. What not to post on social media.
5. Current Legal Dilemmas
6. Steps to take when confronted with inappropriate cyber information.
7. You Won and Free Item Scams
8. Gaming addiction
9 . Photos and Videos
10: Hacking/Identity Theft

Note: This class discusses and watches appropriate videos on sensitive topics including sexting, predators, and legal consequences. Discussions and videos are nonthreatening and student inclusive.

I am a retired Professor and High School teacher. I am also a practicing attorney in New York State. I taught Advanced Placement US Government, Advanced Placement Comparative Government and traditional High School Government for over ten years and was the History Department Chair. I also taught Criminal Justice at the collegiate level for over ten years.
I know it is important to introduce a fact based, non biased lesson to students that will foster discussions with their family and peers. Recently I had the opportunity to teach Cyber Safety workshops with an Educational Counselor in NY. I was in awe over the lack of student knowledge regarding the appropriate behaviors when sending out texts, photos and posting online. It is my hope to help students protect themselves and avoid dangerous and legal situations.
