In this ongoing class, students will be asked to bring a current event story to class for discussion amongst our group. This can range from the silly to the serious. This class is very beneficial for high-school students as they prepare to enter the workforce, or go to university. Being able to discuss current events at an interview, or amongst colleagues and friends, is a valuable skill and our weekly class time will harness those skills for your student. From an early age I was always encouraged to question everything, think critically through scenarios, and always listen to other’s opinions. These are skills that are often lost in the 24 hour news cycle, but will serve you well into adulthood. Students will learn how to read, write, think critically and analyze information. Importantly, we will also work on unearthing connections between events and how every action we take impacts those around us - from the smallest, most inconsequential, move, to the biggest. This discussion group is a wonderful addition to any middle/high school economics, history, political science, or government course. It can also be enjoyed independently. All walks of life are welcome, and there is no “wrong” or “right” answer in discussion. All students will be required to respect each other’s viewpoints - we do not have to agree, but respect is mandatory.

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
I am a trained political scientist, with extensive experience in qualitative and quantitative research. I also have worked in government and politics in many ways: on Capital Hill, running campaigns, and more. The purpose of this class is not to sway students’ opinions, but to teach them to be open to discussing any topic in a thoughtful and respectful manner.
I have a degree in political science and have spent over 15 years working in all aspects of politics including, but not limited to: campaigns, policy, research, and instruction. I have also taught a similar course to this, in person, for over five years.
I have taught current events classes in person at homeschool co-ops in the Washington D.C. area, as well as online for remote homeschool co-ops around the world.
