I am a certified teacher in various subjects and have a Master's degree in International Business as well as a Master's in Education. I have worked in the international business realm before I was a teacher so I am well versed on things going on in the world. Here is the US, we often only get world news if it is on our local news, but I dive into international news sites and pull information from those sites and news sources. I feel it is vital for students to get real-world news and know what is happening in the world, and how it affects us.

My goal is to find things happening around the world that students do not see on a daily basis via newspaper articles or news videos that we do not normally hear about, or cool topics to discuss. We will have a discussion each week on the topic and the students will have stuff they can do to go along with that topic for the week. Some topics might be difficult to discuss, but I feel this is a safe place to discuss. We will also work on critical thinking in these situations. I do my best to not take sides and stay neutral on topics but still share factual information, but I want to grow their critical thinking skills to dive into the topics and see all sides. I allow students to share their opinions and we discuss the topic.

All resources will be shared in a Google folder weekly nad I provide websites and videos on the topics covered. I will post work for the topic after class ends and they can do their work that goes with that topic that week. Nothing is required but I want to provide some resources for them if they choose to use them.

Previous events discussed include:
- Mars rovers
- College Tuition and Loan Changes
- Facebook vs Meta
- Social Credit Systems
- Electric cars vs regular
- Afghanistan
- Qutar Soccer Games
- AI and Technology

***Please note the following:

1. This class is ongoing and I do not have a set amount of weeks it will run. After each semester, I will add more sessions as time goes and as long as students are interested, I will keep the class running. Sessions and days may change after holidays.
2. This class bills on Sundays. Please ensure your payment method is solid. The reason for this is because every Sunday the system will withdraw students due to processing errors. If this happens, I try and send a reminder, but often students lose spots and I cannot open more. Please ensure this does not happen if you want to keep your spot. :)
3. If you are not in actual attendance for 3 weeks in a row, the system will withdraw you.
4. Please make sure your student is mature enough to have a discussion based class. I require them to still respect each other, others opinions, and raise their hands to speak.

This class is ongoing and the topics will change weekly and do not build on each other. I do use some information as well as videos on occasion to further discuss these topics. I try to pull topics that are in news and ones that are not as much covered and look at all sides of the topic. I teach and prompt critical thinking in this!

Sources used will be from a collection of sites and resources from around the world. Some of these sites are US News and World Report, American University (collection of all news sites across the world), Euro News, World Newspapers and World News. I also sometimes get articles from BBC, The Guardian, Channel News Asia, The National News, Sci Tech Daily, and others. I try to avoid the mainstream media outlets.

Metas de aprendizaje

Students will learn how to find information and talk respectfully about events happening in the world.

Orientación para padres
**We will NOT be discussing anything that is massively controversial in this class or certain events happening right now that could cause upset to students. I feel that is up to parents to share with their students. We will also not discuss Covid-19 or the vaccine. That topic has many various opinions and will not be discussed. Other things that will NOT be discussed will be the following: BLM, US Elections, Racial-related topics, LGBTQ-related topics, Gun-related topics, or anything controversial right now. **

I have been a certified teacher in various subjects for many years. I believe critical thinking and current events are needed in our schools and I love teaching this class. I discussed current events with my charter students and they enjoyed getting news and information from around the world that they normally would not get.
