Prior to our first meeting, please work on learning to make the "daisy", which is a yellow center with 4 white edge pieces. The DAISY TO WHITE CROSS page of the handouts will help. After class, students should practice solving what they have learned in class. Once confident, they will be ready to learn the next steps by taking another Cuber 101 class. Students who can solve the white cross prior to taking Cuber 101 have the highest chance of solving the cube in just one class.
Evaluación
Cubing is self-assessing. If goals are met, they will achieve each step toward the solve. Students who are having trouble, will receive help from the teacher to diagnose the problem and fix it.

WELCOME TO CUBER 101!!

OVERVIEW:
In this one-time, 55 minute class, students will receive instruction on how to solve the 3x3 Rubik's cube using the layer-by-layer beginner's method. They will get full color solution handouts that will help them during independent practice after class. Instruction will be modeled using an over head camera so that students can see the teacher's hands and cube. Students will take turns getting direct instruction as I help them solve each step.

WORK:
It can take up to 3 classes to learn to solve the cube, depending on student's prior knowledge with cubing, practice time, and personal aptitude. If students learn to solve the daisy step prior to their first class, they can often cut down the number of classes needed by 1 or 2. Learning the daisy prior to class will also lead to a more productive first session as we can then move straight into applying algorithms.

CHALLENGE:
All students can learn to solve the cube! Cubing is challenging and requires a growth mindset that embraces mistakes as just a part of learning. Additionally, students must learn to persevere through times of frustration and/or confusion. Learning the cube includes learning a new language (algorithms), and learning to focus on specific parts of the whole.

At the beginning, students often become distracted by the "nearly solved" pairs of colors nearby. They instead will learn to take a strategic approach to the cube, focusing instead on accomplishing each individual step by carefully following an algorithm.

Cubing is a great brain exercise, easy to take with you anywhere, and an awesome focus tool!

SPEED & OTHER CUBES:
The beginner method is not ideal for speed cubing, but it is a great place to begin! With this method, students can eventually solve the cube in just under 1 minute. Speed cubers use advanced methods such as CFOP to achieve even faster times. Once learned, the beginner method sets students up with a strong foundation for learning new and faster algorithms, as well as for solving new cubes. Other cubes, such as the 2x2, use many of the same algorithms to solve.

Metas de aprendizaje

Students will learn to . . .
~read and apply cubing algorithms
~learn to solve each layer of the cube

Lista de útiles escolares
STUDENTS MUST HAVE A REGULAR SIZED 3x3 CUBE. Any brand will do, but it must be a standard 3x3 cube with a regular color arrangement. Yellow opposite White, Red opposite Orange, and Blue opposite Green.
It is highly recommended to have the solution handouts printed IN COLOR and brought to class.

IMPORTANT: For the greatest success with young learners, having parents nearby to help students avoid left and right, clockwise and counter-clockwise mistakes will help students to avoid meltdowns.

I have been a licensed elementary school teacher since 2012. I have taught grades K, 1, 4, 5, and 6 while in the public education system in Hawaii. During 2020, when schools moved to distance learning as a safety precaution, I found a love for teaching online. I appreciated the benefits online school when I saw that some of my students who struggled socially were suddenly comfortable and confident online! In 2021, my family moved to Idaho and I began teaching on Outschool. One of my favorite things about teaching online is meeting students from all around the world!

I was born to 2nd generation immigrant families. My father's side is Japanese-American, and my mother's side is Filipino-American. Hawaii is very multi-cultural place so being born and raised there makes me truly appreciate different cultures, food, and places.

My teaching style is engaging, interactive, and very relational. I feel that positive human connection cultivates an environment for optimum learning.

My favorite subjects to learn, and to teach, are Science, Math, Art, Engineering, and Philosophy. I love learning new methods, exploring new ideas, and tackling new challenges.
