This is a flex schedule course and does not have weekly meetings. Although there aren’t live classes, students will have the opportunity for teacher support through check-ins and online discussion (Nearpod, school page, etc). Email is also an alternative option to receive responses in a timely manner. Students will receive and be responsible for watching prerecorded videos, reviewing handouts, and completing activities and assignments. This course is similar to a live class, but is an alternative means for learners who cannot participate in the scheduled live classes due to scheduling conflicts, comfort level or unfamiliarity with the live version of the class. "The Crossover" is an excellent book designed to encourage students to develop reading skills through real-life experiences, verse, and poetry. Students will be expected to engage with the teacher and classmates through weekly guided discussions. Ongoing feedback for learners and responses to questions or concerns will also ensure there is active communication between teacher and students. The environment will have the feel of a live class, but allowing for flexibility while having interaction with peers and the teacher. This course will also offer a sense of community so we can each learn from each other's observations, thinking, and experiences. The Crossover Summary: The narrator of the novel (which is told in verse) is Josh Bell, an 8th-grade boy. He and his twin brother Jordan—or JB—are basketball stars and are best friends on and off the court. Basketball is extremely important to them, and they both want to play professionally someday. Their father, Chuck “Da Man” Bell, was a famous basketball player back in the day, but he no longer plays because, as the boys discover when snooping through his box of memorabilia, he has patellar tendonitis. Dad is always giving them his famous “Basketball Rules” and telling stories of when they were children and could shot free throws by age three. Their mother, Dr. Crystal Bell, is the assistant principal at their school. Students will: -understand and review biographical information about Kwame Alexander and the time period he was raised -identify the emotions revealed through literature -summarize basic elements (plot, characters, setting, perspective) -define the meaning of words in the story -comprehend the story's events through critical thinking questions -share ideas and participate in classroom discussions or debates This class will consist of optional meetings, guided discussion board questions, interactive games (ex. Quizizz, Kahoot, Nearpod, etc), practice worksheets and other materials, notes, and assessments to show learning. The recommended schedule for this course is: Week 1: Warm-Up Week 2: First Quarter Week 3: Second Quarter Week 4: Third Quarter Week 5: Fourth Quarter Week 6: Overtime Although meetings are available to assist students, students should try to complete most work independently. They should be self- disciplined and motivated. Students will be expected to watch videos, complete homework, complete quizzes, and ask/answer questions that are posted in the classroom.

Orientación para padres
"The Crossover" has sensitive content. While there is no overt profanity, players trash talk each other at times. There is also sexual innuendo used when mentioning his parents are quiet in the next room (presumably indicating they are becoming intimate).
Being a public school teacher at a rural, low-income, and trauma-informed school, I am comfortable discussing topics with courage, compassion and clarity.
