The first session will focus on beginning crochet and properties of equilateral triangles (equal side lengths, equal angles). By the end of this session, learners should have finished, or made a good start on and know how to finish, a crocheted equilateral triangle. A "make-up session" will be offered following the first session, in case any learners need help (or want to socialize while they work on more triangles). Between sessions, learners should continue making equilateral triangles until they have four in all. In the second session, we will assemble the four triangles into one regular tetrahedron, the smallest Platonic solid (a three-dimensional figure with faces which are regular polygons and all the same kind).
Metas de aprendizaje
Learners will crochet in rounds, using chain, single crochet, and double crochet stitches, to make an equilateral triangle.
Learners will join crocheted pieces into a larger project (in this case, a tetrahedron).
Learners will verify that a triangle is equilateral.
Learners will physically examine further geometric properties of equilateral triangles (for example: equiangular; three lines of reflectional symmetry; order-3 rotational symmetry).
Learners will, physically and with dynamic geometry software, examine parts and properties of regular tetrahedra (for example: faces, edges, and vertices; four planes of reflectional symmetry; four planes of order-3 rotational symmetry).
Learners will connect properties of equilateral triangles and regular tetrahedra (for example: lines of symmetry of a triangle/planes of symmetry of a tetrahedron, rotational symmetry of a triangle/rotational symmetry of a tetrahedron).

Orientación para padres
Learners will need to use age-appropriate functional sharp objects (scissors and possibly yarn needles) to cut yarn and assemble pieces into the final project. If desired for safety purposes, nail clippers can be used instead of scissors to cut yarn, and the crochet hook can be used to pull yarn through for the final assembly step.
Lista de útiles escolares
Yarn (standard worsted-weight acrylic which usually costs under $5 will be fine -- if the learner is new to crochet, light or bright colors are better than dark colors) Scissors for yarn (nail clippers will work if the parent wants the learner to be extra safe) Crochet hook compatible with the yarn (if using the recommended yarn, about a G or H hook -- also under $5) Stitch markers (if official ones are not available, learners can use paper clips or a different color of yarn) (under $2) If anyone in the family is or is likely to be a crochet enthusiast, a kit with many sizes of ergonomic hooks and other tools like needles and stitch markets, like this one https://www.amazon.com/WooCrafts-Large-Eye-Ergonomic-Arthritic-Hands-Best/dp/B06XHHJ1TV/ , is worth considering. The larger grip can also be easier for beginners, just like little kids using bigger crayons. Optional: yarn needle for tucking in ends (comes in most kits, or available separately, but if you haven't got one, you can use the hook) Optional: wire or six zip-ties (used is OK) to put into the tetrahedron edges for stability, and cutting tools to trim them to length

Hello mathematicians, puzzlers, and other curious people!
I'm a homeschool graduate, math professor, textile/sewing enthusiast, literary hobbyist, and general curious individual, here to share all of the above with the next generation. Math classes that are helpful and understandable, instead of just trying to figure it out for yourself from a book, are my main focus — I believe deep, confident understanding of math is for everybody.
I'm in US Central Time but flexible as to time zones. If you need a class offered at an international friendly time, just ask!
Want to start class already knowing a classmate? Or, do you just like getting deals? With my Bring-a-Friend discount, you can tell a friend to sign up and tell me who sent them, and you'll both get 25% off (processed manually through the refund system). You can bring more than one friend and get more than one discount — if you bring four friends, you get the class for free!
A few testimonials, in my students' own words:
I needed some help to knock out a 6 week Summer Business Calc class after not doing any math for over 20 years. Avrila worked with my schedule and demonstrated expert level knowledge of the subject matter in every lesson. Whether helping me construct equations from cryptic setups, develop test strategies, or just review the standard limit or calculus rules to complete problems, Avrila always knew what was required and gave me just enough information to figure things out for myself. I can not recommend her highly enough!
She explains things so well and walks you through topics step by step. She is extremely patient and super nice!
Avrila is awesome! She is extremely knowledgeable and flexible with my busy schedule. She explains these concepts in a super simple way making it much easier to understand. She helped me get through the majority of my semester, helping me improve my GPA more than I ever had hoped. I highly recommend her for any of your tutoring needs regarding stats.
