Class Description In this 8-week creative writing adventure, kids aged 8-13 will craft their own short story (500-1000 words) through fun, interactive lessons on brainstorming, characters, settings, plotting, and revising. With step-by-step guidance, peer feedback, and a supportive small group (3-8 learners), students build confidence as writers while exploring any genre they love—fantasy, sci-fi, or realistic. Perfect for intermediate English learners (able to write simple paragraphs and join discussions) with a passion for storytelling, this course ends with a polished story to share with family and friends. Class Experience What will be taught? This course teaches kids how to write a complete short story from start to finish. Students learn essential storytelling skills: generating creative ideas, developing compelling characters, crafting vivid settings, structuring a plot with a beginning, middle, and end, writing engaging dialogue, and revising for clarity and impact. By the end, each student will have a polished short story (500-1000 words) and the confidence to keep writing. How is your class structured? The course runs for 8 weeks, with one 1-hour live Zoom class per week and 1-2 hours of homework (writing assignments and revisions). Each week focuses on a key storytelling element, building toward a complete short story. Classes include a mix of mini-lessons, hands-on writing, group discussions, and peer feedback in a small group of 3-8 learners. Homework is submitted via Outschool’s classroom platform, with personalized teacher feedback provided weekly. The final week features a story showcase where students share excerpts and celebrate their work. How will you teach? I teach through a blend of clear instruction, interactive activities, and personalized support to spark creativity and build skills. Each class starts with a short mini-lesson (e.g., explaining plot structure or character development) using slides and real story examples. Students then engage in guided activities like free-writing prompts, creating character profiles, or mapping plots on printable templates. Group discussions and pair-shares encourage collaboration, while in-class writing time allows for immediate teacher support via Zoom chat or verbal Q&A. Homework assignments (e.g., writing a scene or revising a draft) reinforce skills and are tailored to each student’s story idea. What’s your teaching style? My teaching style is enthusiastic, supportive, and student-centered, fostering a love for storytelling in a safe, inclusive environment. I emphasize creativity over perfection, encouraging kids to explore their unique ideas while providing clear guidance to improve their writing. I use positive reinforcement to build confidence, offer constructive feedback to help students grow, and model activities (e.g., writing a sample opening) to make concepts accessible. My classes are interactive and collaborative, ensuring every student feels heard and valued. How much will learners get to interact with you? Students interact with me extensively through live Zoom classes, personalized feedback, and direct support. Each 1-hour class includes: Mini-lessons (10-15 min): I present concepts using slides and examples, inviting student input. Guided activities (20-25 min): Students write, create profiles, or map plots with my real-time guidance via Q&A or Zoom chat. Group discussions and pair-shares (15-20 min): Students share ideas or drafts in small groups or pairs, with my facilitation to ensure everyone participates. Story showcase (Week 8): I lead a celebratory reading where each student shares their work and receives praise. Outside class, I provide written feedback on homework via Outschool’s private messaging, offering specific suggestions and encouragement. Students can also ask questions through the platform, ensuring ongoing support. Additional Details English Proficiency: Recommended for intermediate English learners (able to write simple paragraphs, understand short texts, and join discussions). No prior writing experience is needed—just a love for stories. Materials: Notebook/paper, pencil/pen, or access to Google Docs/Microsoft Word. Printable templates (e.g., plot diagram) are provided via Outschool’s classroom. Class Size: Small group (3-8 learners) ensures personalized attention and a supportive community. Homework: 1-2 hours weekly, including writing scenes, outlines, or revisions, with flexibility for different skill levels. No Trademarked Materials: All examples and activities use original content or generic story references created by the teacher. Engagement: Zoom features (polls, reactions, breakout rooms) and fun activities (e.g., voting on favorite story ideas) keep classes lively. Students can write in any genre (fantasy, sci-fi, realistic) to suit their interests. Parent Communication: Weekly updates are posted on Outschool’s classroom to keep parents informed about progress and assignments. This course is designed to ignite creativity, build writing skills, and leave students proud of their finished stories. It’s a perfect fit for young writers eager to bring their ideas to life in a fun, supportive setting!
