Is your teen a reluctant writer or struggling with grammar, vocabulary, or organizing their ideas? This weekly creative writing and English Language Arts (ELA) class is designed to help teens grow as writers: boosting confidence, improving sentence structure, and unlocking creativity in a low-pressure, supportive space. Perfect for teens who need extra encouragement, this class blends fun fiction writing prompts with practical writing help. Each session offers gentle guidance in grammar, vocabulary, and writing fundamentals, ideal for students writing below grade level or who simply need a safe space to grow their skills. Whether your teen is neurodivergent, anxious about writing, or just needs a little extra support, they’ll feel welcomed here. There are no grades, no pressure, just consistent encouragement and step-by-step guidance. Unlike purely creative writing classes, this is also an ELA-focused class where students will: ✅ Improve sentence structure and grammar ✅ Explore creative expression ✅ Gain confidence in writing ✅ Get support in a relaxed, no-pressure environment What Makes This Class Unique? 📌 No pressure, no grades – Teens can relax and enjoy writing without fear of being judged or “getting it wrong.” 📌 ELA support woven into creative writing – We focus on key English skills like sentence structure, grammar, and clear communication—all within fun, fiction-based prompts. 📌 Ideal for struggling or reluctant writers – Whether your teen is behind in writing, dislikes grammar, or feels nervous about creative expression, this class offers the support they need to build confidence. 📌 Join anytime – Each session is standalone, so learners can jump in at any time without needing previous lessons. What’s Included Each Week? ✏️ A creative writing prompt – New and engaging themes designed to spark ideas and encourage storytelling. 📘 A mini lesson on ELA skills – We’ll cover foundational elements like organizing ideas, sentence clarity, grammar, and descriptive language. 📝 Writing time with live support – Learners can write independently with me available for help and encouragement. Every week features a writing prompt that allows students to explore storytelling, character creation, and imaginative scenarios without the pressure of grades or evaluations. The class focuses on building skills like organizing ideas, crafting clear sentences, and exploring descriptive language—all tailored to help students gain confidence in their writing abilities. This class is ideal for teens who benefit from extra encouragement and are looking for a judgment-free space to develop their writing at their own pace. Example weekly prompts or themes: 1. Twisted Fairytales 2. The Arrival 3. “What If?” Scenarios 4. The Time Machine 5. Ordinary to Extraordinary 6. A Letter Never Sent 7. Animal Adventures 8. The Midnight Market Outschool requires that cameras are on for registration, but there are no requirements for learners to keep their cameras on. I'm Ms. Riot, a creative teacher (certified, qualified and experienced) from London, England. My teaching adventure began at university with the completion of my 4-year degree (Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Primary Education) back in 2007.
In the UK, we achieve our QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) through additional exams and proven experience which I also achieved in 2007. My dissertation allowed me to carry out research into how we can motivate young learners to want to read more. I completed one of my student teaching placements in Arizona, USA and I worked as the Literacy Lead for two summers at a not-for-profit camp in New York, USA.
As an elementary classroom teacher, I developed creative classrooms where students felt safe enough to fail. My passion for reading also allowed me to develop a new career as a high school librarian, teaching reading lessons across the school. I have also taught students English up to the age of 16 at a prestigious online school.
More recently, I have worked within the learning department in a large museum, teaching at a range of online schools and designing curriculum for education resource companies. I also deliver lectures to trainee teachers.
At the heart of my teaching philosophy lies a belief that learning should be an adventure, sprinkled with curiosity and laughter. We can be serious about learning without it always being too serious.
