Students will be offered positive feedback regarding their music patterns/compositions as well as how to best show the pattern so others can follow along and learn the song they have created.Experiencia de clase
This is a project-based learning class for students with some beginning/continuing piano instruction who want to work with myself and peers on creating, recording, and teaching their own songs. Because students will be supported in their own creative process, it is an appropriate class for a variety of levels and interests, as I will be emphasizing the use of patterns and simple musical structures in ways that are easily grasped by students with experience in playing and learning music, regardless of how long they have been taking piano. Our final project will be a simple song of 4 or 8 beats (or longer if the learner wants!) that employs repetition/patterns and is recorded on video for fellow classmates to also learn your song. Although the main goal is musical-inventing and sharing an original musical song- we will also touch on aspects of filmography, instruction, and technology. Since this is a project-based class, it may be repeated and continued past creating one video in order to deepen a student's understanding of musical patterns, instruction, and simple, kid-friendly video editing. Weekly structure will vary based on student needs, however we will spend each class time working on reading, improvising, and sharing our own musical ideas, often with a class prompt or weekly theme. Students may join any time, but may benefit from booking a separate catch-up session as content will build in such a way that could leave behind less experienced musicians/beginners who choose to join later in the course. Weekly structure, depending on main task on syllabus and student project needs: 10-15 minutes Demonstrations and group practice of skills for the project 10-15 minutes practicing those skills individually and in groups, time for personalized instructor feedback ~Students will need to make videos of themselves playing songs with their fingers and notes clearly visible-- this may require access to a camera phone/separate recording device and an adult helping film (examples of this sort of shot may be viewed in the introductory video) ~This class may be repeated to go farther into the various topics: filmography, instructional design, musical patterns and compositions.
Metas de aprendizaje

Orientación para padres
We will use outside resources for making/editing/sharing our videos:
-Canva
No account is required, students will be invited to join projects during class time. If students want to do more than have a little experiment using Canva's video editing, parents may decide to get their own (free) Canva account. That is not required for this class.
Students will need to make a final project video of them playing their original short composition/music pattern: this may require adult help to hold and/or lend a camera.
To optimize Zoom for music, please ensure "Use Original Sound" is enabled before the class meeting. Every week, when entering the class meeting, "Use Original Sound" should be selected.
Requisitos previos
This is a class for students who have already done some piano: they should be comfortable inventing their own music patterns and be willing and able to play/record their inventions (possibly) with some adult supervision and help.
Lista de útiles escolares
A piano or keyboard of any size A camera/phone to make videos on. Videos will be uploaded in the classroom or recorded directly on Flip.

As a professional musician and a mom, I put a high value on exposing children to music in fun, uplifting, and creative ways. I particularly enjoy introducing music in ways that support and affirm a student's own innate musical understanding, and help bring that out from the start. I believe in whole child education, understanding that a learner brings their whole self to the lesson, and that my role is to affirm and support their WHOLE self. My ACE Educator workshops focused on different ways to engage the whole child-whether cultural, emotional/SEL, neurodiversity, or other difference, I care about your learner having the best possible introduction to music.
My own musical training included studies overseas, where exposure to a different culture surrounding musical education broadened my own training and goals in teaching beginning students to play. Although I have an affinity for starting students off right as beginners, I have worked with music students of all ages and levels, and value the changing needs and goals when helping intermediate or advanced musicians grow and hone their skills. When I'm not making music and teaching, I'm probably knitting and designing unique knitwear and clothes to wear and gift :-) I also enjoy pottery, painting, and sewing, to name a few things.
Studio policies:
All my classes are currently autoposting recordings. If there's ever a safety reason for a recording to not be posted, you will not be able to view it. If you miss a class, you are encouraged to watch these recordings. I follow all of Outschool's policies regarding refunds and make-up classes.
If you are taking private classes with me, I will always wait at least 20 minutes before closing the section. I otherwise follow the same refund and absence policies as set forth by Outschool: students must be logged in by 10 minutes after the start of class. Given the nature of the classes I teach, I will not teach to an empty classroom, but practice videos will be available when the class listing calls for it.
Many parents are curious about where to start their learners. Here's a quick rundown/sample course of studies:
Younger beginners 3-5:
Ready for Piano->Introduction to Piano and Music Book A, Book B, Then begin Book 1
5-7 Year Olds: Start directly in Book B
Older beginners (8 and up): Beginning Piano Lessons, Book 1. For those who prefer an ongoing course offering, I now offer a class called Piano Level 1, where we cover some of the same materials in Beginning Piano Lessons, but with more abstract concepts of music theory and improvisation. It still includes a lot of fun games, however! :)
