In this art-meets-creative writing type of class, students will learn how to make fantastic Calligrams with live instruction and feedback from the teacher. A calligram is text arranged in such a way that it forms a thematically related image.The teacher shows the learners, in 4 weeks, four different forms and styles (a single word, a phrase, a portion of a song, and an excerpt from a poem respectively) that are used in illustrating fantastic calligrams and suggests illustration tips in every single meeting.The learners will be asked to follow the teacher's guidelines to draw 4 of the most innovative and creative calligrams in English. A polished copy of every illustration made during class time is required to be displayed (or shared) with the whole class in the start of every other meeting. This means that learners will have to take some time after class to fix any errors and improve on their calligram illustrations.

Metas de aprendizaje

By creating calligrams, learners get to experiment with distinct forms in verbal illustration by using English calligraphy/typeface as their primary source of inspiration.Every week, the learner gets the opportunity to draw one form of calligram. By the end of the class, learners would have prepared 4 wonderful illustrations in four distinct styles.This proficiency-learning art method helps to demonstrate that constructing art can be fun and educational at the same time since it utilizes visual and verbal components in its making.

Creating Calligrams is an exercise that merges English and illustration. Being both an English teacher and a visual artist, I am offering  this class as an invitation for a multi-disciplinary approach to learning illustration by verbal influences and English calligraphy.
