A learner is assessed by understanding the answers on each chess puzzle sheet and knowing how to checkmate to win their games. When a student practices chess at home with others, or on-line, their skills will increase--this will reflect in their knowledge of the game.Experiencia de clase

Nivel Beginner
The students will learn how to checkmate using their King and Queen on the chessboard. They will learn how to make the "Sandwich Checkmate," in which the Queen comes right between the two Kings on the edge of the board. The students will learn how to make the "Crooked Sandwich Checkmate," in which the two Kings are in an "L position" apart from each other and the Queen is "sandwiched" in between them. They will also learn about the "Diagonal Checkmate," in which the checkmate occurs in the corner of the board, with the King, Queen, and opposing King lined up diagonally. The students will also learn the "Queen on the Edge Checkmate," in which the Queen attacks the King on the edge of the board and her King prevents the enemy King from escaping.

We will be using the lichess.org website for students to play chess games on-line. The students will be copying the game link and pasting it in the Zoom Chat Box for other students to click on and access the game. Usernames and passwords to lichess.org will not be used for this class.

Students should have a pencil in class and the chess puzzles printed out, which will be attached in a PDF form in the Classroom.

I love to see how Chess helps the brain to think, to make predictions, to sequence, see patterns, etc. I love to see when a student learns how to checkmate and improves upon their game!
