Tarea
2-4 horas por semana. Students will have assigned tasks each week to complete. We will have check-ins for progress on a weekly basis. Students will also be asked to partake in virtual or physical cooking classes to enhance their cooking skills.
Evaluación
Assessment will be informal, but will include effort and participation in making sure to get the tasks done each week in a timely manner.

GENERAL SCIENCE 

12 WEEK COURSE:

This course will combine reading, writing, science experiments, cooking, video and editing. Students will be exposed to general science concepts while pursuing a love of cooking. 

This class is meant for students who are already cooking and are familiar with basic kitchen and cooking principles. 

This is a self-paced class with NO live meetings.

Mondays of each week, a Google Slide link with a video recording will be posted in the classroom. In this document, there will be an interactive lecture, links to short videos, and questions.  

By Wednesday of each week, students will be expected to post in the classroom a short written or video response to the materials.

By Friday of each week, students will be expected to submit answers to the questions  that are provided in the Google Slides on Mondays. Students have the entire week to work on the assignment. 

Students are able to check in with the me weekly via the Outschool classroom/private learner messaging, which will allow for any clarification that is needed. 

-Learners should be self-motivated, have basic knowledge of cooking and an interest to explore more with cooking and science. 

-Learners will find a virtual or physical cooking class that will be ongoing and they will keep a summary of the classes they attend. 

-Students will have labs that explore general science concepts, but also relate in some way to cooking. There will be video demonstrations to support the labs.

-students will choose recipes from different cultures, cook them for their family, have their family critique them.

-As a culminating activity, students will compile their favorite recipes and create a recipe book.

-As an optional enrichment, students can create 3 episodes on you tube to showcase at least 3 of their favorite recipes.

Otros detalles

Orientación para padres
Students will be expected to cook recipes on their own or with the help of parents. Students should already have basic knowledge of cooking and using kitchen tools such as the stove, oven, knives, etc. The labs will require the use of a microwave or hot plate. Students will have choice in recipes that they will cook. Therefore, if there are any food allergies or lifestyle restrictions with food, students can adjust.

The materials for the labs are listed below: 

FRUIT LAB:
Mason jars with lids can be bought at Wal-Mart, Target, Amazon, etc for around $1 per jar. If money 
is tight, get a set of 6 jars for the class. You don’t HAVE to do one jar per student.
Suggested Fruit: apple, orange, strawberry, pear, grapefruit 
Fruit to avoid: grapes, lemons, limes

MAKING YOGURT

Hot plate or microwave
NEW plastic cups
450 mL of milk(can be less if necessary)
Aluminum foil
Incubator(or heating pad and a towel) & Refrigerator 
Thermometer
Sterile plastic spoons
Computer or lab top

MAKING GINGERALE

Empty 1/2 liter plastic or glass bottle
½ liter of distilled water
1/8  cup of sugar
Tablespoon of ginger
½ lemon
Two pinches of dry baker’s yeast
Bottle sterilizer (dish soap may be used)
Scale
Measuring cups

I am offering this course because I homeschool my children and I design classes for them on a regular basis. I designed and taught this class to my daughter and some of her friends. They really enjoyed it and it was a great supplement to students learning general science.

 I have been teaching 20 plus years in various capacities. I have taught k-12 here in the U.S. as well as in Central America. I homeschool my own children with experiential learning including extensive travel to different countries, immersing in different cultures, as an integral part of our curriculum. I also have taught for National University's Education department for the past 15 years. I teach in the teaching credential program. Among the many classes that I have taught, The Diverse Classroom and Multicultural Education are among them. 

In my background as an educator I have designed science curriculum not only for homeschool families, but also I have designed integrated science curriculum for k-12 students. 

I love facilitating, designing, guiding and sharing knowledge with students.
