In these sessions, after baking a warm batch of cookies, we will follow the story of Calvin from "Trouble Next Door" by Karen English.  As we munch on fresh baked cookies, we will use different types of outlines to discuss characters, sequence of events and inferences. We will determine the author's purpose, point of view and how the author engaged the reader while exploring the stories’ conflicts and solutions.   We will uses the 5E method (engage, explore, explain, extend and evaluate) to discuss Calvin's adventures.  Finally, we will use our outline to create a book report presentation.  We will use the five questions family to develop three paragraphs re-telling the beginning, middle, end and lessons learned from the story.  We will also make a recipe book from our weekly fresh baked cookies.  Our weekly breakdown will be:

Week five             Chocolate Chip            Using outlines/paragraph writing/
Week six               Sugar Cookies              Final book report/student's presentations              

 Cookie baking will be done at the beginning of each session.  Learners do not need to participate in the baking segment.  However, learners who wish to participate will need adult supervision nearby.
 Common ingredients are listed under Materials in the Learner Supply List area.  Please keep your child’s dietary needs in mind. Students are more that welcome to use alternative and share vegan recipes.

Lección 1:
Author's Point of View/Peanut Butter Cookies
 A discussion on how the story was written will help students understand the different types of author's point of view.  A story outline will be give for students to begin their presentation.

 This session will discussion on engagement and the author's purpose.  We answer the question where and when to describe setting, time and locations in the story.

Themes and Topic/Oatmeal Cookies
 This session will discuss the main idea and supporting detail.  The question why will reveal how themes and topics are used in stories.

 The question who will investigate the types of characters.  We will identify and discuss how character's types and character's action affect stories.

Please be aware cookie ingredients may not meet everyone's dietary restrictions. Some ingredients may contain allergens such as nuts, wheat, dairy, eggs or soy. You are welcome to adjust and share recipes with substitutions or alternative ingredients during class time. Also, students will be exposed to potential hazards including but not limited to stoves, ovens, knives, mixer blades or blenders while cooking. Therefore, student will not be allowed to participate in the baking portion of the class without an adult present. Student without an adult can watch the baking segment and participate in the book club reading and discussion.
