This ongoing conversational skills group will focus on conversational skills for everyday life. It is designed for students with autism (ages 9-12). The class will be taught using visual examples and by interacting with students. The teacher will use slides and video clips to teach the concepts. They students will be encouraged to practice the skills taught that day by interacting with other students in the class. The topic will be different each week. Weekly topics include: Meeting 1: Greetings Meeting 2: Stay on Topic Meeting 3: Maintain a Conversation Meeting 4: Take Turns Talking Meeting 5: Start a Conversation Meeting 6: Join a Conversation Meeting 7: End a Conversation Meeting 8: Ask a Question Meeting 9: Say "I Don't Know" Meeting 10: Introduce Yourself Meeting 11: Get to Know Someone New Meeting 12: Introduce Topics of Interest Meeting 13: Give Background Information Meeting 14: Change Topics Meeting 15: Talking Too Long Meeting 16: Sensitive Topics Meeting 17: Compliment Others Meeting 18: T. A. L. K. Meeting 19: L. I. S. T. E. N. Meeting 20: Let Others Talk Meeting 21: Include Others Meeting 22: Continue A Conversation Meeting 23: Is It Time To Change The Topic? I have a passion for helping children in the autistic spectrum reach individual goals. I have a Master's Degree in elementary education. I led a support group for parents of children in the autistic spectrum for almost three years. I have also had experience teaching social skills classes to children in the autistic spectrum. I have attended an Autism/Asperger Conference and a Sensory Processing Disorder and Young Children workshop.
