As you read, ask yourself: "What is this book saying about our world?"

Contemporary literature is written as a lens on the world around us. Understanding the world around us and the people in it makes us better people and more able to understand the struggles the world has to offer. Analysis of what is right and wrong as presented in these texts helps us better understand our own morality and interact with hypothetical situations that may be difficult to consider without a modeled example. As we read, we learn about ourselves, who we want to be, and what matters to us.

𝗖𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲:
The class meets every week to allow learners time to read about 100 pages of each book prior to class.
The teacher will give a brief lesson summarizing the book and adding context. This is great for learners who only want to discuss a section of the text or are not available every week.
Learners will explore theme, characters, and the challenges presented in the text through discussion.

The teacher will facilitate a discussion for each book and everyone will have the opportunity to share their thoughts. Students will be challenged to think about what they are reading, explore their own biases, and be asked to share their ideas and favorite passages with the group.

I follow Outschool's policy on refunds for ongoing classes: Parents enrolled in an ongoing class will see a “stop subscription” button instead of “withdraw” on the classroom page after the class’s first meeting. Use this button to prevent any future weekly charges, starting with the following billing period, which rolls over Sunday mornings Pacific time. You can use this to stop future charges at any time. The full details can be found here: https://support.outschool.com/en/articles/2272596-understanding-ongoing-classes

Outschool Attendance Policy: “If your learner misses a class meeting, you are not entitled to a refund. If your learner misses 3 consecutive class live meetings without communicating with the teacher, you forfeit the class fee and the teacher may cancel the class or withdraw your learner.”

Class Cancellation: Please note that per Outschool policy, if there are 0 students after the first 10 minutes of the class, the class will be canceled for that day. The live meetings are scheduled for 50 minutes; however, depending upon the number of students and the amount of participation from the class, some live meetings may be shorter than 50 minutes. If the teacher needs to cancel class a makeup class will be assigned. If the student is unable to attend the makeup class a refund will be issued after the makeup class.

Orientación para padres
Many contemporary books deal with difficult subjects. Families should research the books before enrolling to determine if the books are appropriate for their child. My goal is to ensure learners consider challenging topics with the context of the world around them and analyze what they do and do not agree with. Reading is, at it's core, about discovery.
Lista de útiles escolares
Students will need to obtain a copy of the book. Available at most libraries, local booksellers, and online retailers. Because these books are newer, they may not yet be carried in libraries but I generally try to keep to books that retail under $15.
Recursos externos
Los estudiantes no necesitarán utilizar ninguna aplicación o sitio web más allá de las herramientas estándar de Outschool.
