The focus of this class will be on the thinking skills needed to comprehend what is being read. I keep the class limited to 3 students so that everyone gets a chance to participate and I can monitor progress and modify as needed. Students read, with permission from Reading A-Z, a short book or text on the screen. I introduce vocabulary as needed before we start the reading. We read the book or part of the book together and take turns reading it a second time. (If a student is not comfortable having a turn reading aloud, they can pass. ) While reading we make connections, question and predict. Each text focuses on a comprehension strategy. Here are some of the strategies covered:
Main Idea and Details
Story Retell
Compare and Contrast
Sequencing
Categorizing Information
Summarizing
Story Elements : Identify characters, setting, and plot

One to two books are covered per week. Additionally, I cover decoding of multi syllable words as needed in the reading pieces. This is not the focus of the lesson, but is covered as needed.

The texts used will all be second grade leveled readers or lexile 510-620. The levels will be adjusted to the needs of the group. Again, I keep the class to no more that 3 students. This allows me to adjust depending on the needs of each group, and to give each student an opportunity to participate.

Hi my name is Michele Pallas. I am a retired teacher from California who loves to teach reading and believes every child can be a successful reader. I don't give up. I have taught grades K through 6th grade special education for more than 30 years. Additionally, I ran a learning center for general education students and special education students, and team taught with general ed teacher in their classrooms.

I believe every child has their own learning style. This may be auditory, visual, kinesthetic or a combination. I use a multisensory approach to all my teaching. We talk, write, move and listen through out the lessons. I believe in the I do it, we do it and you do it method of teaching. Every child has an opportunity to share. Classes will be fast paced. Each session will be divided into 5-10 minute sections. Each will focus on a different skill.

I hold a general education credential, a mild to moderate special education and moderate to severe special education credential, and a resource specialist certificate. I have taught reading, mathematics, and written language at the elementary level. I have a Masters in Education. My true passion is teaching beginning reading. My second passion is teaching the thinking or metacognitive reading comprehension skills needed to be a successful reader. I love to help students become life long readers, even the reluctant ones.

So in closing I would like to share a fun fact about myself. I have two goat friends that I visit on my daily walks. Their names are Jellybean and Lollypop. Have a great day. Hope to see you in my classes.
