The activities in this course will support student growth in the understanding and skills needed to support authentic dialogue and problem-solving. They will emphasize fairness through understanding, and including everyone who is immediately affected by challenging circumstances in discovering the solutions.  

Each session will follow the same format:
Check-In/Circle Opening 
Review Circle Guidelines
Connection Activity
Discussion Prompts
Check Out/Circle Closing

Circle Guidelines:
-Respect the talking piece.
-One person speaks at a time.
-Speak and listen from the heart.
-Encourage and welcome all points of view.
-Listen without judgment.
-Say just enough.
-Open and close the circle by hearing each voice. (Check-ins and check-outs.)

Goals for Students:
 1. Students will learn to value and regularly use proactive, positive ways to build and maintain a peaceful classroom community. 
2. Students will develop and enhance positive and supportive connections with peers. 
3. Students will develop an understanding of the principles and vocabulary of restorative practices. 
4. Students will learn how to participate in the circle, including circle guidelines. 
5. Students will learn to use and respect a talking piece. 
6. Students will learn how to use restorative questions to support conflict resolution and other types of communication. 
8. Students will contribute to developing appropriate ideas for how to make things right when harm has occurred. 
9. Students will learn to communicate how they are affected, given situations using affective statements and restorative questions.

Please be advised that due to the nature of the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) activities in our circles class, unsolicited (and potentially highly emotional) expressions around sensitive topics may be shared. Rest assured that students will be reminded of circle guidelines before each circle session. Confidentiality will be strictly upheld; however, in situations such as this, I will respond by encouraging the student to speak with a trusted adult. Parents will be notified if a student expresses a danger to themselves or others.

Each learner should come with a talking piece.  A talking piece can be any item that means something to the learner.  The talking piece serves as a visual reminder that only the person holding up their talking piece has the floor to speak.  The talking piece helps resolve the issue of any one person dominating the discussion and encourages active listening.
