This course will cover the basics of using colored pencils to create a completed piece of artwork. The specific skills we will cover will include: Material selection, use, and care Planning out a piece of artwork Basic color theory Lighting and shading Layering Blending Highlights This course will end by guiding students through completing a colored pencil piece to integrate the use of each technique.

Week 1Lesson 1IntroductionWe will discuss the basics of colored pencil use including: Material selection Material care Benefits of colored pencil Challenges of colored pencil Creating a swatch Planning a colored pencil pieceWeek 2Lesson 2ColorsA color wheel will be studied in this lesson. Students will have the opportunity to explore color variations and combining colors. Techniques in this lesson will include: Color selection Gradients Color for moodsWeek 3Lesson 3ShadingIn this lesson, students will become familiar with shading and learning techniques such as: Colors for shading Strokes for shading Light angles Shading placement Creating a sphere using light and shadingWeek 4Lesson 4LayeringThis lesson is about layering with colored pencil. We will explore the importance of creating layers and the proper methods of doing so without damaging the paper or hindering effective blending later in a project. We will practice using our knowledge of colors to select and layer colors to gain a desired result. Students will be guided to create several different tones through layering a variety of colors.Week 5Lesson 5BlendingA variety of blending techniques will be introduced in this lesson. Students will combine prior knowledge of colors, shading, and layering and will build on those skills with blending. Students will create several basic shapes including layering colors and shading, and will complete the shapes by blending the create a smooth, paint-like finish.Week 6Lesson 6HighlightingStudents will be taught strategies for preserving light spaces within pictures. Students will also be introduced to methods of adding highlights to a drawing after layering and shading. These techniques will be practiced through creating a drawing of a water drop.Week 7Lesson 7SketchingStudents will practice the planning techniques learned earlier in this course to design a simple sketch. Students will be guided through the process of creating their sketch and ensuring it is ready for completion.Week 8Lesson 8Final ProjectStudents will use the sketch created during the prior class as the base for their final project. The remaining class time will be spent guiding students through each of the skills taught in this course in order to produce a completed drawing. This will give students a thorough overview of how each step and technique works together to produce a colored pencil work and give them confidence to use these skills independently.

Students will need to have: a set of colored pencils (minimum or 12 colors) a pencil sharpener a kneaded eraser a mixed media or watercolor notebook (white paper only) a simple sketchbook or printer paper will not be sufficient for this course a solid, flat workspace
