These small-group "book club" style lessons are designed to cycle through books by the author, Beverly Cleary. We will discuss one book a week as a stand-alone lesson, so if you have a slower reader in your home, that is perfectly OK! You can join the group every-other week and give your child two weeks to read each book. Then you get to catch the missed book on the second cycle so that your learner does not miss any fun discussions or that week's literary focus. Each lesson will enthrall readers with a mix between a guided lesson focused on developing a specific literary skill and genuine discussion between members about their ideas and opinions regarding the week's book. Each lesson will roughly follow the same format: we will begin with a chance for each member of the club to discuss something important to him or her. Afterward, we will discuss the characters, setting and plot of each story as well as significant vocabulary and one quick grammar focus. Next we will take a deep-dive into one literary highlight pertaining to the book. Finally, the club time will end with a round-robin discussion of the book in general. The books and literary focus will be as follows: Week of September 29 The Mouse and the Motorcycle Character Development Week of October 6 Beezus and Ramona Round/Flat Characters Protagonist/Antagonist Week of October 13 Ramona the Pest Story Structure Week of October 20 Ramona the Brave Setting Relevance Week of October 27 Henry Huggins Description Week of November 3 Henry and Beezus Sequence Week of November 10 Ramona and her Father Problem/Solution Week of November 17 Ramona and her Mother Cause and Effect Week of November 24 Runaway Ralph Compare and Contrast Week of December 1 Ralph S. Mouse Figurative Language Week of December 8 Ramona Quimby Age 8 Dialogue Week of January 5 Henry and Ribsy Inference Week of January 12 Ramona Forever Theme and Main Idea Week of January 19 Ramona's World Conclusions supported through text Week of January 26 Ribsy Motif
