Tarea
2-4 horas por semana. Detailed weekly assignments will be given. Students will complete work individually at home. Assignments can be adapted by families depending on student's learning style and family's homeschool philosophies. Student work will include about 75-100 pages of reading per week and will also include several different optional activities (including free-writing prompts and work on projects). If families are using this as part of a complete homeschool curriculum, students should expect to spend 2-3 hours of work outside of class, however it will be possible to complete the work in as little as one to two hours per week for some students. Students taking this class for Honors credit will need to spend more time per week. Because student's abilities vary greatly, the amount of time it takes students to complete assigned work will vary greatly.
Evaluación
Students will be informally assessed through class discussion to ensure student understanding and so I, as the teacher, can adapt the class to student's needs.
Letra de calificación
Parents / Students have the option of receiving formal grades for the research essay, honors assignment, and project, as well as the class as a whole. For families who need work for a homeschool portfolio, there will be several pieces of work that can be used to that end. Please reach out with any questions.

📖 CLASSIC AND MODERN, SECTION 4: A HIGH SCHOOL ENGLISH COURSE FOR HOMESCHOOLERS

A dynamic English class that explores resistance, identity, and expression through classic poetry, powerful novels, and creative projects—perfect for homeschoolers in grades 9–10.

As a homeschooling parent, you want your high schooler to grow as a thoughtful reader, skilled writer, and critical thinker. But finding a literature class that offers real-world relevance, creative depth, and academic credit can be tough.

----------------------------------

🎓 THE SOLUTION

This 8-week English course brings together classic poetry, compelling fiction, and high-interest graphic novels to help students explore what it means to challenge norms, find voice, and express ideas clearly. Alongside engaging reading and discussion, students will complete writing assignments—culminating in a research-based essay—and creative projects that help bring literature to life.

This class can be taken on its own or as part of a full-year English 1 or English 2 curriculum. Sections 1, 2, and 3 are scheduled on the same days and times for easy planning. An Honors-level track is also available.

----------------------------------

📚 WHAT TO EXPECT

Each week, students will:
📖 Read a mix of classic and modern texts, including:

The Pedestrian by Ray Bradbury (short story)
Sunshine by Jarrett Krosoczka (graphic memoir)
Faint of Heart by Kerilynn Wilson (graphic novel)

           regimes
🎨 Complete creative projects that bring literary themes to life

personalized teacher feedback and optional grading

📝 FLEXIBLE AND CUSTOMIZABLE

This class is built for homeschooling. Weekly assignments include reading, writing, and skill-building work, but they aren’t broken down by day—so you can adapt the pace to fit your family’s routine.

Orientación para padres
The reading selections for this class are appropriate for high school students, with content that explores complex themes and mature topics. "Between Shades of Grey" is a historical fiction novel that depicts the forced deportation of Lithuanians to a Siberian labor camp in 1941. While the violence is realistic and sustained throughout the book, it is not graphic. There is a mention of a woman being coerced into prostitution, but the scene is not explicit or extensively detailed. The book contains a similar level of mature content to books such as The Hunger Games, The Book Thief, or Night. To help you determine if this book is suitable for your child, you can check out the detailed summary on Common Sense Media here: https://www.commonsensemedia.org/book-reviews/between-shades-of-gray. "Sunshine" is a graphic novel memoir with uplifting themes, telling the story of a high school student who worked at a summer camp for children with terminal cancer. For a more detailed summary of this book, visit: https://shop.scholastic.com/parent-ecommerce/books/sunshine-9781338356311.html. "Faint of Heart" is a speculative fiction graphic novel that addresses themes of grief and joy, exploring the emotional complexity of the human experience. It makes a thoughtful follow-up to the other two books in this class. For a more in-depth look at this book, you can find a detailed summary here: https://www.harpercollins.com/products/the-faint-of-heart-kerilynn-wilson?variant=40855942201378. Since every family’s comfort level with these topics may differ, it is recommended that parents read the summaries linked above before enrolling their child in the class.
Requisitos previos
Because this class can be used for high school credit (English 1 or 2), at a minimum students should have completed a year of eighth grade English Language Arts (in any program). For specific questions, please reach out.
