This is a flex course. Flex courses have no live meetings. I will use written posts, photos and videos to teach this course. There will be multiple posts throughout the week. Week 1: students will learn about how to incubate chicken eggs. They will also learn about basic chick care. At the end of the week students will receive a worksheet to do that covers items they learned throughout the week. They are encouraged to ask their classmates for help with any answers they do not know or remember. This helps students to interact with each other. Week 2: We will talk about basic chicken care and will also talk about some common chicken ailments and their treatments. At the end of the week students will receive another worksheet covering this week's content. Week 3: students will learn about some different breeds of chickens . We will look at photos of the different breeds, discuss their main purpose (meat or egg production). We will not discuss processing chickens, only that the main purpose of some breeds such as the Cornish is for meat. At the end of the week students will receive a worksheet about the different breeds. Week 4: Students will learn how to make two homemade treats for their chickens and will also learn how to make some enrichment toys for them. Please see supply list below for supplies that will be needed for this week. At the end of this week student swill receive a worksheet of fun chicken facts. Throughout the course I will post various discussion questions for the students to answer and get to know their classmates a little more.

Orientación para padres
During week 1 we will briefly discuss egg shrink wrapping and that this causes a chick not to be able to hatch. This may be upsetting to some students.
During week 2 I will show pictures of some common ailments and their treatment. There will be no photos of dead birds and nothing extremely graphic, but there will be photos of injuries such as Bumblefoot. Again, this may be upsetting to some students and may show blood.
During week 3 I will briefly mention main use of the different breeds, so meat birds will be mentioned. We will not discuss this in depth and will not discuss processing, only the fact that some birds, such as Cornish, are mainly kept as meat birds.
During week 4 we will be making treats. Some treats utilize the stove/oven and microwave. Please assist students as needed to keep them safe. Also these are meant strictly as a treat and are not intended as a full diet. If your student has any allergies, please check the supply list prior to signing up to make sure there are no allergen concerns. If there is, please ask prior to sign up to see if an ingredient can be substituted. We will make Chicken oatmeal, Chicken Oatmeal cookies and No bake hen cakes.
