Important Notes: All of my classes are inclusive. Classes are suitable for the neurodiverse child. Learner receives special attention. Class will be tailored to meet individual interest and skill levels. CEFR: B1-B2 and above. Class may be offered in English or Spanish. This class focuses on a brief history of Chess, from its controversial origins and game evolution to what we know as chess today. It includes geography, history, original chess pieces and artifacts in museums throughout the world, famous historical figures who were renowned chess players, Grand Masters, famous games, paintings, and surrounding social events. This class is ideal for the kid who is interested in how to play chess and would appreciate learning of its historical context to start with a comprehensive understanding of this game's long history and impact on humanities. Class is structured with a welcome, relaxing and introduction time; the slide presentation includes multiple perspectives of the game's controversial origin, etymology of the game, ancient paintings which point to interesting topics surrounding the game, the development of the chess figures we recognize today as the standard, the artifacts used to control the time, and chess master players. Class invites engagement in the form of questions, comments, discussions. Then, Learner will enjoy a mindful breathing moment, before setting up the board, learning the positioning of the figures and basic moves. Class is taught in an inclusive, interactive way, in an environment that celebrates multiculturalism, curiosity, and experiences learning as a fascinating, enriching, and kindness infused opportunity. Class size is kept small so Learner feels relaxed, free and welcome to engage in the process. For these reasons, and for gauging Learner's interest level being able to adjust accordingly, I require open mics and video in my classes so there is a sense of community and engagement with the material. In our mindful class, Learner is asked to raise a hand when wishing to participate as this encourages grounding, patience and deep listening skills bringing with itself a myriad of benefits. Class includes information from reputable primary sources (see below for details) making the material come to life in a meaningful way. No previous experience is required.
