This social chess club is for players of all skill-levels that already are familiar with how the game is played. If your child still needs to learn the mechanics of how to play chess, I do offer 1:1 tutoring, and the occasional camps for that.

We play on a Google Slides presentation created by myself where each person drags their pieces on the board. A "Go" button is moved to indicate when your turn is over. On-topic talking is allowed, questions are encouraged, but it's still a game of concentration so we stay respectful to our opponents by not being disruptive. Chess boards will be assigned usually in order of arrival, however I try to mix it up so students play as many different opponents as possible. My teaching style in this class is pretty laid-back. I like to laugh with my students and keep the vibes light and positive.

Please note that this is not a class with "instruction", however this is an opportunity for students to play and socialize for fun with other kids. They will learn through experience, by playing others with varying levels of ability. I am there as a facilitator to pair everyone up, answer, questions, suggest and provide minigames when appropriate, and try to keep everyone engaged.

We play by dragging our pieces in a Google Slide presentation. This works great if you have a mouse, trackpad or keyboard. This is not really compatible with iPads unfortunately. I have some students who join in the Zoom meeting with their ipads, but then play the actual game on another device. If you want to try it out before joining, here is an example of a board we'll be using:

Metas de aprendizaje
I want my students to learn:
1. The value of LOSING. When you lose a game, you were taught something, and get the opportunity to grow!
2. The love of playing chess; so valuable
3. Strategies to help them improve their game of course!

Hi everyone! I have a passion for learning and teaching that I can't wait to share with you! I am a certified K-8 teacher with a degree from ASU and experience teaching and tutoring preschool-sixth grade. My specialties are math and reading interventions. I also love playing chess, and started a chess club in the last school I worked in. I have so much fun sharing these same methods with my Outschool students. My philosophy is that learning should be FUN! I want my students to have as much enthusiasm as I do about what I'm teaching. Something interesting about me is that I play (and have taught) violin, and I am a big F1 Racing fan!
