This class is designed to provide an introduction to the concept of chemical reaction equilibrium. Many topics will be covered over this 5-week class that will give the student a basic understanding of reactions that can "change direction" and reach a steady state. Students will have the opportunity to practice what they learn each week.

Week 1: Kinetics
-> Video: Reaction Rates and Rate Laws
-> Fill in the blank note sheets for each video
-> Practice problems: How to calculate the reaction rate, how to effect reaction rates, how to find the rate law

Week 2: Equilibrium 1
-> Video: What is Equilibrium and Le Chatelier's principle
-> Fill in the blank note sheets for the video
-> Practice problems: What is meant by equilibrium, applications of Le Chatelier's principle

Week 3: Equilibrium 2
-> Video: Reaction Quotient & Equilibrium Constant
-> Fill in the blank note sheets for each video
-> Practice problems: determine the reaction quotient or equilibrium constant for given reactions

Week 4: Equilibrium 3
-> Video: Equilibrium Calculations
-> Fill in the blank note sheets for the video
-> Practice problems: use an I.C.E. table to calculate equilibrium values

Week 5: Equilibrium 4
-> Video: Applying Equilibrium to solubility & acids and bases
-> Fill in the blank note sheets for each video
-> Practice problems: apply the previous 4 weeks to the unique case of solubility & acids and bases

This is a flexible schedule course, meaning that there are no live meetings. Each week new videos, notes pages, and practice problems will be posted to the classroom. The completed practice problems will be uploaded to the classroom (either scanned or a picture taken) for feedback from the teacher. There will be a discussion thread where students can ask for help from the class and the teacher.

To get the most out of this course, the teacher will provide notes pages with blanks for the students to fill in as they watch the videos. Students are expected to complete the practice problems each week as the material builds upon itself weekly.

The teacher is always be available via message (either in the classroom discussion or private message) and will typically reply within 12 hours, but never more than 24 hours unless extenuating circumstances.

I have taught chemistry and chemical engineering at the college level. I have a Master's degree in Chemical Engineering from M.I.T. and a Ph.D. in nuclear engineering from North Carolina State University. I have been teaching all disciplines of science to home school elementary, middle and high school students for 14 years. I know how to present science in a fun way to boost students interest in the subject.
