Oxygen and Magnesium together? OMg!! This class is designed to provide an introduction to a vital chemistry concept, the "mole". Many topics will be covered over this 5 week class that will give the student a basic understanding of the types of chemical reactions and how to balance them. Students will have the opportunity to practice what they learn each week. Week 1: Review of the Periodic Table and the Mole -> Video: Periodic Table Review -> Video: The Mole -> Fill in the blank note sheets for each video -> Practice problems Week 2: Formula Mass and Unit Conversions -> Video: How to determine the weight of a chemical compound -> Video: Easy Technique for Unit Conversion -> Fill in the blank note sheets for each video -> Practice problems Week 3: Balancing Chemical Formulas -> Video: Balancing Simple Chemical Formulas -> Fill in the blank note sheets for the video -> Practice problems Week 4: Classifying Chemical Reactions -> Video: The Types of Chemical Reactions -> Fill in the blank note sheets for the video -> Practice problems Week 5: Balancing Chemical Equations -> Video: How to Balance Chemical Reactions -> Fill in the blank note sheets for the video -> Practice problems This is a flexible schedule course, meaning that there are no live meetings. Each week, new videos, notes pages, and practice problems will be posted to the classroom. The student should upload their completed practice problems to the classroom (either scanned or picture taken) for feedback from the teacher. There will be a discussion thread where students can ask for help from the class and the teacher. To get the most out of this course, the teacher will provide notes pages with blanks for the students to fill in as they watch the videos. Students are expected to complete the practice problems each week as the material builds upon itself weekly. The teacher is always be available via message (either in the classroom discussion or private message) and will typically reply within 12 hours, but never more than 24 hours unless extenuating circumstances.

Students will need a calculator capable of scientific notation. A TI-30 series calculator is great (no graphing capabilities needed). Even the calculator on a cell phone will work.
Notes pages for each lesson and practice problems will be provided by the teacher.
