10 reuniones en vivo
15 horas presenciales
Tarea
1-2 horas por semana. Learners will need to spend time outside of class working on their characters and learning lines, for their scenes. The amount of time this takes will vary by student. If a parent or sibling is able to run lines with them, or if they are able to interact with their scene partner to run lines outside of class, that would be helpful for most students. I encourage students to write out their lines and/or record them, to aid in memory. Students may also need to spend some time finding set pieces, costumes, props, or developing lighting or sound effects for their scenes. They may also be asked to record and submit their portion of their scene to be edited into a final scene. Again, this will vary by student and scene.
Evaluación
Students will receive feedback after their final performance that will reflect their final performance, as well as their journey in the class.

Experiencia de clase

Students in this class will be working on developing characters and a completed scene within the confines of a written script. Each learner will be assigned a scene and a scene partner or partners. Over the course of ten weeks, students will read the script and find details about their character as well as their relationship to the other character(s) in the scene. By the end of class, all students should have a production-worthy scene to share.

This course can be taken multiple times, as each class will have different scenes and different scene partners.

Below is a rough outline of the class structure. Activities, and timing are subject to change according to the needs and goals of the members of the class.

Week 1
In week one we will get to know each other and learn some basics.
Students will participate in ice breakers and ensemble building exercises and start to become comfortable with their classmates.
We will look at some scripted scenes as a group and discuss how we find information about a character and their traits.
We will do some audition type activities and students will be asked to read different parts.

Week 2
Students will receive their assigned scenes and roles.
We will once again do some ensemble work and allow scene partners to interact with each other.
We will discuss what makes a character engaging for us.
Students will have the opportunity to read through their scripts on their own then we will do a table read of all the scenes.
Students will make a list of characteristics and 'facts' about their characters. They will also have the chance to do character sketches and/or write them a short biography or timeline.

Week 3
In week three we will continue our ensemble building efforts, and do some exercises pertaining to objectives.
We will discuss the relationships between characters and begin to develop their history together.
We will figure out what happened before the scene started, for each of the characters, and begin to breakdown the moments, or beats, of the scenes.
Students will have the opportunity to read their scripts with their scene partners.

Week 4
In week 4 we will pin down characters' objectives and find ways of pursuing them.
We will do some improv exercises to help solidify these goals and their immediate importance to the character.
I will work with the groups, individually, while the other groups practice on their own.
We will begin to discuss constructive critiquing of performances. If time permits, we may watch a clip and give some critiques.

Week 5
In weeks 5 we will work on some memorization tricks and tips.
We will continue working on character development, scene building, ensemble and objectives.

Week 6
In week 6, students will support each other to get everyone off book.
We will continue all of the above and start to discuss costumes, props, set pieces, sound and lighting.
I will again work with each group individually, while the other groups practice/work on tech ideas, on their own.

Weeks 7
In week 7, students will rehearse their final scenes.
This week, we will watch scenes and audience will practice giving constructive critiques.

Week 8
In week 8, students will pull in their tech elements and rehearse scenes to incorporate them.

Week 9
Final Dress Week!!
We will rehearse all aspects, and I will work with each group individually.

Week 10
Showtime!!
Audience will complete critiques for each scene.
We will reflect on the journey, the final scenes and our experiences in the class.

Orientación para padres
Learners will be working with scene partners in this class. They may be put into break out rooms, where they will be unsupervised for a portion of time, with their scene partners. It is expected that all students will use this time to do the work assigned to them. If you think this may be a problem for your child, please let me know. I will assign scripts and scene partners according to the maturity level and acting ability of each student. They may encounter a scene that has teen or adult characters in mature situations, but they should still be classroom appropriate. More advanced and mature students may be asked to play characters who are very different from themselves; some that make poor life choices, or do not exhibit ideal behavior. They will be asked to perform these characters with honesty and without judgement. If there is some reason that you think your child would not be able to handle this, or if they have issues differentiating appropriate acting behavior from appropriate real life behavior, I ask that you let me know, in a private message, so I can assign pieces accordingly. Learners in a scene may decide that they would like to work together when the class is not in session. That interaction is encouraged, but is at the discretion of parents, and will not be supervised by a teacher. If learners in a particular scene feel they need extra work time with me, I will be happy to try to schedule additional classroom time, probably immediately before or after a scheduled class time.
Lista de útiles escolares
Line Learner is not mandatory, but it is a great tool and is usually $3.99 to download. Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
I love teaching all levels and abilities. I have worked with children in various settings, including home school, charter school, camp, after-school clubs, and a performing arts center. I will be offering classes for a range of ages including Drama Book Club, Creating Characters, Devised Drama: Online Edition, and more. I have earned an Associate's Degree in General Studies, a 90-HR Certificate in Early Childhood Education, a Bachelor's Degree in Theatre and a Master's Degree in Education with a focus on Inclusive Classrooms. I am currently teaching ESL online. I have worked, in various capacities, in academic, community and regional theatre for more than 20 years. For over a decade, I have been a contributing artist to one of the longest running professional women's theatres in the world. There I have had the opportunity to be a part of the creation of many world premiere works that empower women. The drama classroom gives students an opportunity to be creative, to explore themselves and the world they live in, and to make connections with others. It is a place where struggling students can shine, gifted students can explore new challenges and disengaged students can find a tie. I believe that learning should be enjoyable for students and teachers! My husband and I live in Baltimore City, MD, with our two kids and many pets, and we own a local coffee roasting business and cafe.
