Experiencia de clase

Together we will explore the theatre! We will use recycled cereal boxes to cut out, paint, decorate and staple together a theatre for our play. We will explore the idea of backdrops and what they do and how we can create different scenes.

This class takes Public Speaking, Creative Writing, Theatre - both elements and improv, Project-Based Learning and rolls it into one offering that covers main curricular points in Elementary and Middle School English. This class is Dysgraphia and Dyslexia friendly as we don't do any actual writing unless the learner wants to outside of class. This is a multidisciplinary inquiry project.

Week 1: Creating the theatre using a cereal box. While the paint dries we will design backdrops. **Please assist your learner with this stage.
Week 2: Drawing characters for our plays and creating paper stick puppets and exploring main characters and supporting characters.
Week 3: Telling stories that might work with our characters and talking about the story arc. We will discuss the last week's presentations and talk about stage fright and ways to overcome it.
Week 4: Performance week! Each child will put on a show with their puppet theatre for the class. We will start with a short lesson on audience etiquette. If a child is too anxious to perform their play live, parents are encouraged to help them film it and then screen sharing their video in the class.

This class is one that explores theatre making craft, story writing as well as story arc and character types.

I can't wait to see what we create together! PS: I said "videotape" in the video! Hilarious! By all means use a cell phone to capture your show. :D

There is no requirement for writing but it is encouraged to have some sort of notecard system of drawings or point form notes to remember our story lines for performance. Performance is improv based. This is a dysgraphia friendly class that allows for play exploration of Elementary and Middle School English concepts.

We are ESL Friendly, CEFR Level B and C.

Also: Just a note, the class is set to 40 minutes but sometimes we go over. I wanted to allow for kids who want to be done sooner and some that want to hang out and chat.

Necesidades de aprendizaje
We are a Neuroaffirming Organization! We support learners with different needs and meet them where they are at. We are experienced scribes and enjoy exploring different approaches to writing and creating for each learner.
Orientación para padres
Students will be using scissors and if you want to support the use of an art knife please make sure there is a pad on the workspace to avoid damaging the table top. The first class is a tricky one. Please be on hand to help your learner sort out the way we disassemble and reassemble the cereal box for our theatres.
Lista de útiles escolares
You will need an empty cereal box (or any kind of box), a pair of scissors, tape, glue, a stapler, paint or markers, coffee stir sticks or actual twigs or popsicle sticks, regular paper, card stock if you have it, and of course, your imagination.

Yvonne, B.Mus McGill University, is an interdisciplinary artist with a wide range of interests. After a minor concentration in Art History, I continue to be fascinated by the subject and exploration into how we have changed art over the centuries. This includes fashion! I like to upcycle old clothing, create collage and assemblage sculpture, create electronic music and I work a lot with recycled materials and papercrafts. As a homeschooling mom of an ND learner, I've developed project based learning opportunities that combine curricular expectations with specific interests. I am of Metis and European heritage and enjoy exploring history and current art trends in my culture as well. Learner Led project based learning is where we connect with learners and inspire them to continue in their learning journey.
