Nivel Beginner
This class involves the construction of a model. I do need ALL students to have their video cameras turned on. I can assist them by viewing what they are doing.

Students will learn about DNA and the scientist that made it happen. through a coloring diagram, 2-3 minute Youtube videos, and thought-provoking discussions as we build the DNA model.

My Classroom rules:
Listen to the Teacher.
No talking while Teacher Pat speaks.
If you want to ask or answer a question; please raise your hand.
Speak when your name is called.
I do prefer video cameras ON. Backgrounds are welcomed during class time if they do not distract.
Limit chat room discussions.
Let's celebrate DNA day!

Class Format:
1. Introduce ourselves. Answer the question "Why do we celebrate DNA day?"
2. We will view a Youtube video on the history of the scientists that made it happen and listen to a DNA rap song.
3. Introduce Genetic Vocabulary with a question-and-answer session.
4. Build DNA using different materials that are readily available.
5. Review by coloring the Double Helix Coloring Worksheet. (Please print prior to class and have markers available to use.)

Let's build a DNA model! We will learn the parts that make up a DNA strand through modeling.
-Amino Acid: Adenine, Guanine, Cytosine, and Thiamine
-Phosphates
-Sugars
-Construct DNA using colored marshmallows or different colored gumdrops (or colored mini -marshmellows , toothpicks and licorice. Students do need 2 sheets of computer paper and markers, too.

Metas de aprendizaje

The goal is to learn the history behind who discovered DNA. Recreate the double helix shape and learn the vocabulary involved in it. Also, to make young minds think about how far can mankind can go with coding DNA in the future.

I've taught Genetics for over forty years in my Biology and Forensics classes. I would enjoy teaching your child about why it's important to learn genetics.
