Experiencia de clase

In this one time class, learners will make their own relief tiles from air-dry clay. Relief tiles are of sculptural form, and when finished have a 3d appearance. Creating relief tiles provides a great introduction to the study of clay sculpture, for it requires many similar skills and techniques needed while using clay. There are many different types of air-dry clay on the market, and for this class we will use material that is indeed clay-- for it can dry in the air but also be fired in the kiln. This clay we will use for our relief tile work is wonderful to have if your child is interested with working with real clay. I post the type of clay and materials needed that we will be using below in the supply list.
Clay is a wonderful material to work with and explore. It is very forgiving and flexible and one can easily change their creative directions at any moment in their process. They can draw a design directly onto their clay tiles with a pencil as a sketch, and if a mistake is made, just smooth it out with a touch from a finger. Depending on the design of their work, participants will have the opportunity to create a series of relief tiles and can add embellishments if they choose. Once the clay is completely dried, you can paint on your own with acrylics and/or a finish clear glaze.

**** AMACO Air Dry Clay
For this class, we will be working with air dry clay that is either gray or terra cotta color based. I love using this brand below, for it is clay and can also be used to throw clay on the wheel and be fired in the kiln

****Tools Suggested:
The needle tool is very handy for cutting into tight corners. A variety of different sized loop tools can be used for craving into the clay, creating negative space areas. Beveled edges are easy to carve with the right size ribbon tool. Simple pointed wooden or metal skewers can work great too.

****A flat ruler to measure the sizes of your tiles

****Slip - in a tray or container ( a mixture of clay and water- more water than clay)

****Cardboard- or something similar for the finished tiles to rest on while drying
