O'Canada! This 6 week course will explore Canadian History, focusing on Heritage and Identity, Communities in Canada from 1780-1850 (based on the Ontario curriculum).

This course uses a combination of discussion, lecture, and activities. Learners will be asked to share their thoughts and opinions and will be encouraged to participate as much as they are comfortable. I have a friendly and relaxed teaching style and will work to encourage collaboration and conversation amongst learners.

Schedule:

Week 1: Introduction to early life in Canada (1780-1850), Indigenous communities and early settlers. Discussion about the early Indigenous communities (Anishinabek, Cree, Haudenosaunee, Métis, and Inuit) that lived in the land that is now known as Canada, and early settlers who came to the land from Great Britain and France. We think about how both groups of people felt during this time.

Week 2: Indigenous communities (Anishinabek, Cree, Haudenosaunee). We will learn about each community, where they lived during this time, what their homes looked like, the food they ate, and their languages.

Week 3: Indigenous communities (Métis, Inuit). We will learn about each community, where they lived during this time, what their homes looked like, the food they ate, and their languages. We will think about the indigenous children living at this time, and brainstorm questions that we would want to ask them if given the chance.

Week 4: Early settlers (New France)

Week 5: Early settlers (Upper Canada)

Week 6: Modern society and comparing communities

Some prior knowledge required. Learners should be comfortable reading simple texts and writing independently.

We will create a supportive and respectful learning environment where learners feel safe and comfortable. Learners are welcome to banter and ask questions to challenge our thinking, but respectfulness and taking turns while speaking is required. Disrespectful language and hateful chats, posts, etc., will not be tolerated and will be grounds for removal from the class. Should disagreements arise, we will practice being respectful even if you disagree.

Parents may email me prior to enrolment with any questions about the course!
