Class Experience Topics Covered: Day 1: Leaf Chromatography: Why Do Leaves Change Color? Day 2: S'More Solar Oven: Radiation Heat Transfers Day 3: Trap Building and the Engineering Design Process Day 4: Microorganisms Lurking: Why Boil Lake Water? Day 5:Track Identification: What Animal Left that Print? Class Structure: Each class will be slightly different based on the topic and activity. The teacher will facilitate each activity, allowing students to discuss and work together in the video classroom. They will observe demonstrations, hear short lectures or presentations from the teacher, participate in building projects they can show on the video screen, and will they will converse with others to answer questions in their lab workbook. A PDF packet of all activities and worksheets will be uploaded prior to the beginning of all classes. Weeks 1 and 2 may have some homework or part of their project they will need to finish on their own. They can show it during the next class when it is finished. Student Interaction: Students will interact by discussion in 5 Zoom meetings and will complete projects together in class. They will need to have some projects built or finished for the upcoming class. Note: This course does have some materials that are required prior to certain classes (Week 2, 3) Experience Required: Students do not need any background knowledge for this course.
Metas de aprendizaje
Day 1: Leaf Chromatography: This demonstration will demonstrate that multiple color pigments exist in leaves. They will learn that in
the fall, the amount of chlorophyll decreases allowing the other color pigments to show. They will also briefly discuss the role of chlorophyll in photosynthesis.
Day 2: S'More Solar Ovens: Students will learn more about radiation and the heat transferred from sunlight. They will make their own oven solar out of an old pizza or shoe box. This class does require the oven to be made in advance. Directions for construction of the box will be provided. Then students will then use their oven to conduct a short experiment on whether they can cook their S'more in under 10 minutes. If it is not possible for your student to be outside for this project, or if weather or time of day is an issue, indoor alternatives are possible.
Day 3: Live Trap Building: Students will learn about the engineering design process by using random kitchen items to design a trap prototype. They will attempt to "catch" a small toy car as their prey.
Day 4: Microorganisms in the Water: Students will learn how and why they need to filter water, even tough it looks clear.
Day 5: Who Left That Print?: Students will view different animal prints and learn how to identify animals based on their tracks.

Orientación para padres
Students will need parental assistance when building their solar pizza oven. It will involve cutting and taping cardboard which may be difficult for some students. This will be done at the end of day 1 and should be ready for day 2.

Day 3: Trap Building: Students will choose their own materials from things they have in their home. These items do NOT need to be in the following list. Students will be designing their own trap, so they can use materials that they already have access to. Some items may include: paper plates, plastic spoons, string, popsicle sticks or cardboard pieces, Elmer's glue, scissors, plastic straws, toilet paper tubes, plastic cups, construction paper, toy car (hot wheels) Day 4: Pencil Day 5: Pencil, colored pencils, or markers

Hello Learners! My name is Corrie Bowman Ostrem and I have been a full-time, certified teacher for 24 years teaching grades 2-7. I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education and a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from Montana State University-Billings. I specialize in Gifted education and have extensive experience with math and science curriculums in these grade levels. I have taught grade K-12 as a substitute teacher prior to my regular teaching career. Additionally, I have worked as a private tutor over the last 10 years and have taught for an online ESL learning company in China for the two years. My experience teaching has been in both the state of Arizona and Montana, and at a private bilingual German/ English school in Berlin, Germany (3 years). I have extensive knowledge and training in the Common Core Curriculum and standardized testing platforms, but also have a great passion for extending the learning and creativity of gifted and motivated students. I have successfully taught over 3,500 lessons online to students from around the world. After school, I have coached math clubs, science bowls, science fairs, foreign language, art, film, architecture, and game-based clubs.
I have extensive experience teaching the full elementary spectrum of standards including the subjects of math, science, language arts, writing, reading, social studies, and art. My passions are in math and science fields, although I typically use a cross curricular approach to integrate all the subject areas into lessons. I believe in student choice and passion-based learning and am willing to tailor my teaching based on student interest or need. I believe all content and standards can be taught in a fun, interactive, and engaging themes, making learning much more fun and memorable. I have a strong desire to help kids reach their full potential and strive to provide opportunities for students to dive deeper into topics, go beyond the typical classroom standards, and develop a love of learning at an early age.
Personally, I am a wife, mother, and dog-mom. I love the outdoors and can often be found boating, fishing, or camping. I have a son, two step sons, and two enormous labrador retrievers who keep me as busy as my children! Education is both a passion and hobby for me. I love my job and could not see myself doing anything else as a career! I hope to see you in the classroom soon!
