In this course, we will explore animals, space, the sun, the moon, constellations, weather, light, sound, and do some cool experiments! Get ready for fun activities that make science super exciting as you learn about the world around you and build awesome science skills! Students will explore life, physical, earth and space sciences, as well as engineering concepts, aligned with NGSS standards. This interactive and hands-on course fosters curiosity and builds a strong foundation in first grade science and STEM skills. The class is structured with a balance of interactive activities, hands-on experiments, science journaling and engaging lessons. Our teaching style is dynamic and interactive, ensuring that young learners stay engaged and excited about science. We use a mix of games, colorful slides, short video clips, and discussions to make each lesson fun and easy to understand. Students will actively participate in discussions, share their ideas, and ask questions during the lessons. They'll also get plenty of opportunities to interact with me during our live sessions, where we'll work together on science activities and experiments designed to spark their curiosity and deepen their understanding of the topics covered. This course is designed to be interactive, with students encouraged to share their observations and discoveries. Whether we're exploring the characteristics of animals or creating a shelter for a frog, learners will have the opportunity to engage in a hands-on way, making science both educational and enjoyable. Some parental guidance may be needed for this age for hands-on experiments in class and outside of class. There are a few lessons where we build or design in class, and then the experiment is done outside of class, such as testing the effects of sun or charting the weather. Please check the syllabus for more information on specific activities. Any printable PDFs will be posted in the classroom on the Sunday before class. Students can print these PDFs and bring them to class. Alternatively, students may bring a paper and pencil to class to complete the in-class activities. Required materials for the class include basic household supplies, such as tape, glue, markers, craft sticks, cardboard, toy cars, etc. A specific list of items to bring to class will be posted in the classroom posts at least one week before the next lesson. Students will not need to access any apps or websites outside of the Outschool classroom. Everything will be shared on screen through Zoom by the teacher.

How Useful! (1-LS1-1)
In this lesson, students observe and describe the external structures of various animals, learning how these features help with survival and growth. Through shadow animal activities and discussions, they explore how body parts aid in seeing, hearing, grasping, protection, movement, and intake of resources. Activities include comparing an elephant's trunk to human and animal noses and drawing shadow animals to identify their external features.

Lección 2:
Plant Parts (1-LS1-1)
In this lesson, students observe and describe plant parts, including roots, stems, leaves, flowers, and fruits. Through discussions and interactive activities, they learn how each part serves a function, such as thorns for protection and fruits for reproduction. Students also explore why nettles sting and create their own plant, drawing and labeling its parts to understand plant functions and survival.

Lección 3:
Scaredy-Cat! (1-LS1-1)
In this lesson, students explore how plants and animals respond to environmental information. Through discussions and activities, they learn how body parts help capture and convey information for survival and growth. Students understand that all living things sense and respond to stimuli. Activities include investigating how the star-nosed mole uses its body parts and imagining themselves as animals to describe how their parts help them sense their surroundings.

Lección 4:
Mimic Nature (1-LS1-1), Project 1
In this lesson, students design solutions to human problems inspired by plant and animal features. Observing a duck’s webbed feet, they analyze how such designs influence human swim fins. Students learn how animal and plant parts can inspire practical solutions. They then select a problem, design a solution mimicking plant or animal features, and are assigned their first homework project to build their design and evaluate its effectiveness.
