The International Literacy Association estimates that in our adult lives, 85-90% of our reading is informational. Informational texts help us understand the world around us, including our natural and social surroundings. Our success in schooling, the workplace and society depends on our ability to understand informational stories. Reading informational texts’ benefits include: • Making authentic, real-life connections to information you want or need to know. • Demonstrating higher growth in reading comprehension and writing. • Transferring reading confidence across many genres. • Understanding text features, including captions, pictures and subheadings. This text set features five different internationally recognized architectural landmarks, created out of both need and honor. For example, The Great Wall of China, originated as a military strategy to stop territorial invaders. The Pyramids of Giza represent ancient Egyptians who believed in an afterlife and wanted to be comfortable in eternity. The Taj Mahal stands today because an Emperor from more than 400 years ago wanted to pay homage to his deceased wife. ***Class Structure*** • Establish baseline knowledge and understanding of the day’s landmark discussion by using a KWL chart: What do I already know about the topic? What do I want to know? What did I learn after reading this story?). • Collaboratively read landmark informational text. • Engage in critical thinking-asking “I wonder…,” I notice…,” and I think…” questions. • Analyze and apply informational text comprehension strategies when appropriate: *Cause and Effect *Compare and Contrast *Description *Problem/Solution *Sequence • Summarize the day’s informational landmark story. • Examine captivating landmark-related video. • Gamify lesson review (Blooket, Quizziz). The goal of this five-lesson camp is to engage learners in reading informational stories and learn about famous global landmarks. Understanding informational text structure and gamified reading comprehension complement instruction.

The Eiffel Tower

The building, originally designed to last 20 years, celebrates its 135th anniversary this year, because of constant care and renovations. Also known as the Iron Lady, it receives nearly 7 million visits annually. The tower boasts many little-known features, including a small apartment on the top level (home to Gustave Eiffel during construction).

Lección 3:
The Pyramids of Giza
These monuments are located on the Giza Plateau near Cairo, the capital city of Egypt. They represent ancient Egyptian civilization until the Roman Empire conquered Egypt in 30 B.C; and hold many clues about this mysterious and artistic territory. The pyramids were built more than 4,000 years ago as tombs for the pharaohs and were intended to ensure their safe passage to the afterlife. Pyramids were built for religious purposes. Humans still don’t fully understand their secrets.

The Statue of Liberty
The Statue of Liberty. France gifted this masterpiece to the United States in 1876, in honor of the country’s 100th anniversary; and symbolizes freedom. The statue stands on Liberty Island in New York Harbor. Everything about the Statue of Liberty is big. Her head is 17 feet long and each finger is 8 feet long. Every day tourists go to the top of the statue by climbing 354 steps. The statue took nine years to make at a cost of $100,00.
