This summer camp/workshop is designed to help beginning or tentative writers learn important vocabulary and develop confidence in their writing through focused daily in- and out-of-class activities. Students write with guidance from prompts during class time, and will be given access to additional prompts to practice at home.

Day 1 covers all the material from my Fiction Writing Crash Course! class and prepares students for four days of guided writing. Students will learn literary terminology for characters, point of view, perspective, the components of a story (such as plot and narrative structure), and other key terms that they will use during this camp.

Day 2 ushers students straight into writing, as we focus on character development and play with point of view. Students will choose from character-centric prompts to work on during class time, and may practice at home with some or all of the remaining prompts.

Day 3 brings the action through a focus on active vs. passive language, verbs, and “five senses” descriptive language. Students will choose from action-oriented prompts to work on during class time, and may practice at home with some or all of the remaining prompts.

Day 4 introduces dialogue as a device for developing characters and enhancing action, with a focus on writing dialogue that sounds natural and helps move the story forward. Students will choose from dialogue-based prompts to work on during class time, and may practice at home with some or all of the remaining prompts.

Day 5 puts it all together. During class time, students will write a scene that incorporates characters, action, and dialogue. With encouragement and peer support, students should finish this camp feeling more confident with their writing skills and ready to tackle additional writing classes!

Learners can also take this camp as a two-class series, Fiction Writing Crash Course! (a single class) and Fiction Writing for Beginners (a four week session).

I teach creative writing and popular media & culture to learners from age 8 through high school.

I offer a range of courses that focus on specific literary genres, some traditional and some popular/contemporary, as well as multiple socially-geared classes on popular culture. As a neurodivergent member of the LGBTQ+ community, my classroom is an anti-racist, LGBTQ+ positive, and neurodivergence-embracing space, and I actively include these topics as part of literary analysis.

In my classes, young writers learn to develop characters, to craft a well-structured narrative, and to hone their descriptive language skills. New and reluctant writers will find a supportive environment here. My students workshop with classmates, learning to peer edit and self-edit, as well as receive constructive feedback on their work from me.

I am a veteran writer and editor with a BA in English and an MA in Professional Writing, working primarily in genre fiction, most notably horror, urban fantasy, LGBTQ, and YA literature, though my master's thesis was a collected volume of poetry. My work has been published in print and online, and includes creative fiction, technical writing (particularly tabletop roleplaying games), and topical articles in both local and national publications. With my husband, I own Salt Circle Games, a small tabletop roleplaying game publishing company. I have public high school teaching experience and have also taught creative writing classes for homeschooled students in private homes, through co-ops, and online. You can also find me speaking on panels at scifi/fantasy/comics conventions, discussing popular culture and media.

I am always open to arrange parties, private lessons, group classes for Scouts or other organizations, and to develop new classes to meet students' needs.
