Experiencia de clase

Welcome back to the world of Engineering Design! This is the Level 2 Class for CADD and Engineering Design with Fusion 360. Students will learn more about the engineering design process and how to use the software tools to design and modify product prototypes.

Students will work on a project to model and modify a teapot. They will then learn how to combine the separate parts into an assembly and how to export the finished project into industry-standard design documentation. They will also learn how to use some of Fusion 360's more advanced features, such as animation and simulation of designs. Students will acquire hands-on computer drafting skills which they can use for post-secondary education vocational goals or as a component of further engineering studies.

Lessons will be introduced and modeled by the teacher on screen. Students will complete the steps with the teacher with plenty of time to check for understanding and troubleshoot problems. Students are encouraged to sign on with two devices, if possible (one to display Fusion 360 and one for the Zoom meeting, but this is not required).

There will be printed and video instructions for each step of the project available as supplemental resources. The instructor will be available extensively for questions, help, and troubleshooting during the week outside of class time. Students will be expected to complete the week's assigned project steps, with the time given both in and outside of class, and will receive grades and feedback on their progress, if requested. They will be able to improve and resubmit any projects at any time during the class.

Lesson 1 - Introduction to the project and creating the teapot bottom piece using the revolve feature.
Lesson 2 - Modify an existing file to design and model a spout for the teapot using the loft feature.
Lesson 3 - Use a reference drawing and the form sculpting environment to create a handle for the teapot.
Lesson 4 - Create an assembly using the files created in class and some additional pre-designed files that will be provided.
Lesson 5 - Learn how to use Fusion 360's simulation features to test the teapot design.
Lesson 6 - Learn how to use documentation, rendering, and file exports to share your designs.
Lesson 7 - Learn how to animate assemblies to create and demonstrate working models.
Lesson 8 - Iteration - Can you build a better teapot?

This class is designed to be the Level 2 course following the first Fusion 360 class. I will let students take it without the pre-requisite by permission (i.e., they have previous 3D drafting or modeling experience or if they watch an introductory video I've made for my Level 1 students). Other than a basic familiarity with the Fusion 360 program, students do not need any prior engineering or drafting experience. They will need good basic computer skills and a fast internet connection. We will be using Autodesk Fusion 360, an industry-standard cloud-based design platform, which can run on 64-bit operating systems on either Windows or Mac-based PCs. The system requirements for the software are listed here: https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/fusion-360/learn-explore/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/System-requirements-for-Autodesk-Fusion-360.html

Students will be able to get the software free of charge by downloading the personal version for this class. (Students may also opt to get the free educational version if they qualify.) Students under 13 will need to have a parent create their account with Autodesk to be able to download the software. https://www.autodesk.com/products/fusion-360/personal?us_oa=dotcom-us&us_si=856365d4-f7ab-4884-bc38-a0fc411b5e1e&us_st=fusion%20360%20personal
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will review and build on their skills using Fusion 360 for product design. They will learn lofting, more advanced assemblies, and how to use the simulation and animation features of Fusion 360.

A 3-button mouse is very helpful when using Fusion 360.

I've taught CADD to high school students in both public and private schools and here on Outschool since 2013. I have almost 20 years of experience working with engineering and architectural firms before I became a teacher, so I have a good perspective on how these skills integrate into a real-world career.
