Tabletop and Board Games are so popular! This class is a creative adventure in exploring both the games we love and what we love about them. We will explore a couple of game templates, enhancements and learn some of the terminology that goes with game design. Our goal is to create a simple board game that we can play with tokens and dice. Every week I will post a pdf and a short video covering what we will be doing this week. Please refer to the syllabus for weekly goals. If you would like to share your final product as a short video of the game play with some pictures and maybe even your rules typed up, that would be fabulous. Remember, everything we create in here is the property of the creator so if we are inspired by what we see, acknowledge what you borrow idea wise and keep your work original. *This class applies to the curricular requirements for Applied Design, Skills, and Technologies 6 B.C. Grade 1-6 and directly relates to B.C. Curricular Competencies for ELA Grades 1-6 under Comprehend and connect (reading, listening, viewing) Create and communicate (writing, speaking, representing).

Board Games: Intro to terms
Let's talk board games. Which ones do you play the most, which ones do you like, what would you change? What makes them complicated, what makes them too easy? Details, details. Play as many as you can and identify what each game is about.
Tokens, dice, spinners, maps, etc. Let's find out what all these things mean. This week will be an introduction to terms and components.
Assignment: Let's take a simple game and modify it.

Lección 3:
Playtesting/Prototyping
We talk about the importance of playtesting and prototyping. If you have completed your initial design, this is the week to try it out. I will post my own prototype (not complete, rough draft) board game and invite you to try it and use the playtest feedback form.
Assignment: You will receive a check list to find the strong and weak points in the design and to get playtesting feedback.

Lección 4:
Review and Refine
Review your game, what did you discover? Keep working on it, perhaps you are still deciding mechanisms and structure or you are into the art aspect of design.
This week I will get into a bit of higher level game design theory and what makes a more complex game tick. I will leave you with some ideas on what your next step might be in board game design (one page games) and a more complex template.

🎲Instructor: Ms. Yvonne, BMus. McGill University. Hi! I'm a Metis artist, musician and micro-farmer. My experiences range from 10 years with IBM as a field tech to professional musician. I am a songwriter and a homeschooling mum of two kids and my current obsession is board game design. I believe that child-led project based learning is the key to engagement. As an ND learner myself and a parent of an ND child, I believe connection and relationship are the first step in education. PBL or Project Based Learning allows us to incorporate all sorts of learning in one fun bundle of exploration.
